Default SH-3 Commander Question

I am just starting to use SH-3 Commander and I have a question about an option in the settings. Actually it is a lack of an option and I am wondering why?:hmm:

I don't use the "Generic Names" option (the one that will just call a ship a generic class like "destroyer" in the notepad) because it also seems to erase the real name of the type of ship in the ID book. More so for me, I don't like how if I am at periscope depth and I want to do a sweep with the scope the notepad will flash the name of the class of ship when I point my scope down its bearing even if I happen to miss sighting the ship myself.

So what I do is use the mod that puts a "-" in the notepad for every ship type. This way when I pass my scope over a target the notepad doesnt flash any name at all. I have to see the ship myself to know it is there.

I am wondering why SH-3 Commander doesnt give us this option? Is there something I don't know about using the "-" notepad mod? Does it effect the AI at all?

Also, I am a little confussed about the rollback button. (I know it is going away in the next version). Am I ONLY suppost to use it if I am uninstalling SH-3 Commander or do I use it more then that. :hmm: I am a little puzzeled by it.

Thanks for the great SH-3 Commander program! I love the randomness it adds to ther sim! (Crush depth, failures, thermal layers, ect....) OUTSTANDING!!!!!:rotfl:

Oh yeah...... One more question....
Am I suppost to start SH-3 from within SH-3 Commander everytime....even if I am in the middle of a patrol???

Thanks

I use the manual targetting option, so the name is never flashed. I also use Weapons Officer Assistance so I don't actually do manual targetting, but the name doesn't appear unless I ask him, then he puts it in.

I don't know why SH3 Commander doesn't give that option, but then again doing it the way I do I never even thought about it.

Any time you add a new mod or change anything major you need to rollback first. If you don't it will either unroll it or screw it up altogether. Either way it won't work.

If you don't start from SH3 Commander nothing bad will happen; it just won't update certain files. I always start using Commander. It may not help, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

If you want all of your Commander options, etc.. applied during game then you should always Launch the game thru Commander, I believe.

Peforming a rollback removes all changes that Commander has made in the game.

Here is a portion of its documentation.

IMPORTANT! In order to avoid any potential file integrity problems, ALWAYS perform a rollback in SH3 Commander BEFORE:
- enabling or disabling any mods, either via JSGME or manually;
- uninstalling or reinstalling Silent Hunter III;
- uninstalling SH3 Commander

Whenever you uninstall SH3 Commander you should first click on the 'Rollback SH3' button to remove from Silent Hunter III the SH3 Commander-based mods. Not doing so will mean that files installed by SH3 Commander will remain in Silent Hunter III even after removal of SH3 Commander and may cause conflicts or other instabilities. Note that 'SH3Cmdr.ini' and any installed mods will not be removed. If you do not wish to keep these files, simply delete the remaining SH3 Commander folder after uninstallation.

Thanks Steve!

I, also, use manual targeting but it still flashes the generic name....I think.

Do you mean manual plotting???

Another question......

I love that Commader will randomize the time a DD will spend looking for a U-boat when the contact is lost. Is this little feature still in the latest release? Will it be in 2.7? What is the max time a DD will search?

I cannot believe that the stock SH-3 (or TGW) has a "fixed" value for a search time?

I believe that's 3 questions and 1 rhetorical.

Yes, the feature is in R2.6.1 and the hopefully-soon-to-be-released R2.7.

45 mins is the max - any longer causes adverse effects with escorts returning to convoys.

Now when I am pinned down by a hunter-killer group they will spend more then 45 minutes looking for me I hope! They should spent more like 20 hours.

If 45 minutes is the longest that a convoy escort will look for a sub after it has lost contact will hunter-killer escorts look longer? Like 20 hours? That would be historically correct. Can anyone confirm?

Also.....do AI escorts ever stop and sit in the water quiet waiting for a sub to surface?

A convoy escort was just that
A convoy escort

If a uboat was spotted the escorts job was to force the uboat below and away from the convoy - keeping it down for a time then returning to the convoy

As years went by hunter killer groups and lange range TF groups would be a few hours out from a convoy so could rush to the scene and take over from the convoy escort

The hunter killer groups would stay in position attacking the uboat as long as it needed to

DD's employed allsorts of tactics
Sitting on the surface listening and waiting is one possibility

The longest I've been kept down is 8+ hours real time by HK groups later in the war

As for escorts as long as they keep getting some kind of contact they'll stay much longer than 45 min. 4+ hours for me in WAW recently

While testing -I have had one escort sit still while a second circled when there were two-and when only one-I have had it sit still, attck run, circle, rinse & repeat but they don't sit still for long.

with the upcoming version--the escort srceen--(depending on the escorts)--seem to do in game like they did in real life--two have kept me down and away while the rest steam off with the convoy---and even though I could escape--with the II-I couldn't catch up & rengage.

In The Cruel Sea and other writings Nicholas Monsaratt complains that escorts didn't even do that. He says that for most of the early war all they did was dispatch one to pick up survivors and have the rest stay with the convoy. He states that the only time they ever actually attacked was if they were sure from the start exactly where the u-boat was.

I believe your version; it makes more sense. At least make a half-hearted attack to keep their heads down.
