Default Renown - Boat or Crew?

Which do you spend most of your renown on, the best boat or the best crew? Do you spend any renown on crew members? Has anyone found that using crew members that cost the most renown leads to a better crew, especially in the long run? Do you upgrade your IIA to a IID and then improve that with the latest and greatest or just wait until you've accumulated enough renown to get a VIIC or IX?

I limit my renown to my boat upgrades personally.
I like to hold on to my starting crew and advance them as far as I can without hiring other hands. I do recruit one other officer before my first patrol but thats it, and he is free (0 renown).

I spend mine on the boat. It's my job as captain to ensure that the crew is trained hard and effectively to become a well oiled machine. The experence will come with each patrol......I hope

They can't earn them automatically, but after every patrol you can give 1 qualification out to any crew member via the awards panel.

Or use SH3Cmdr and dish them all out in one go

Yes, I know that they earn them after every patrol, but how do I award them the qualifications? I know how to dish out medals, but qualifications?

I think its just "drag and drop", in SH3commander and also in the game.

The same way as medals...go to the 'qualifications' area then drag and drop

My renown is for boat upgrades only

I handle the crew via SH3Cmd and I spend the renown on the boat. It's much more valuable than the crew

Perhaps he ment how do you handle the qualifications, in what order or importance. If that it the case I do mine in the following order:

Watchmen (if I do not have one)
Repairmen
Gunner
Flak gunner
Radio
torpedomen

BOATS, ABSOLUTELY

I never recircuit crews unless

(a) Before 1st patrol and I still have rooms for them

(b) Some of them passed away from attackes

However, I usually purchase important updates, such as radar. However, I never buy engine / battery updates / torpedoes, they don't worth the percious renowns
(I think)

I don’t upgrade or use it. Although I think when you bring in a damage boat back from a mission, you lose, or maybe the phase is, you use the renown to repair.
Upgrading, how was this handled in the real war?
I’ve never paid for any sailors, just took the ones that cost nothing. They do improve with each mission.

I do so to both but with a leaning towards my U-boat.
