Can I remove Starforce the following way?

Hi guys,

a quick question,

I would like to do a clean install of SH 3 on my computer - Starforce free.

Here is the scenario:

1. I have a dual boot of Windows XP on two disk partitions C: and D:

2. I would boot to Windows on partition D: and install SH3 from my original DVD on partition D: only.

3. After installing and updating to patch 1.4 I would take the SH3 folder and move it from D: to C:

4. I would boot to Windows on partition C:

5. I would erase and recover partition D: via Norton Ghost from my backup image to the state before SH3 installation => Would that completely send Starforce to hell?

6. I would apply No-CD patch for SH3 on my C: partiton and play the game

What do you think guys? Please limit your comments to No-cd patch discussions. I buy original games/software since developers deserve it, but I am sick and tired of constant CD checks, Starforce, Whateverforce, etc. Thanks.

Firstly, check here....
http://www.onlinesecurity-on.com/protect.phtml?c=55

Secondly, I know you don't want comments about the No-Cd Crack, but it's best not to advertise/talk or otherwise promote this 'workaround'. It is not supported or welcome within this site. It can only end badly.

It doesnt matter if your buying the games legally and use No CD patched on them. but we dont suppose to FIX our games this way. people who discussed/mentioned NO-CD patch before you around here either got a smack in the face or got banned from subsim.

we are not going to flame all over you , we just warn you that you better NOT mention this on subsim.com.

Now to help you, Danlisa has the right page for you,
read it well.

You can go to Starforce's web site and get the SF removal tool.

Once this is removed and you do a new install of SH3, SF is only reintroduced when you put the DVD in again and click play.

If you use the DVD to play you can, after the game is shut off, click the SF removal tool and be SF free again for all other procedures until you decide to play Sh3 again and use the DVD to do so.

It is a hassle but better than SF messing with DVD burners etc.

No-CDs promote pirating and this site and its members prefer all purchase their copy legally as it insures continuation of the fine SH series.
I am sure you have done so but just to be clear.

To help answer MKUbanis question, and taking into account views on NOCD (speaking as someone who's bought the game, paid for replacement hardware and is happily playing SH3 without SF ;-);

1) Copying the installation from C to D won't enable you to play if you boot from C; the are non SF related registry entries which are required.

2) You method for SF removal will probably work on D.... but will still leave you without the non SF entries you do want.

For my part I ran the SF removal tool, and then ran a few other tools to pick up on root kit vulnerabilities and I use the NOCD. If you're going to rely on the SF removal tool, take a careful note of the drivers assigned to your CD / DVD / burners and HDD's before and after SHIII install ... so that you can be confident the SF removal tool leaves your drives in the state they were in before it screwed with your system. This is all I have done (no need for dual boot partitions) and have had no repeat hardware or burning issues since.

Hope this helps.

I always buy my games (it's the only way to fund game companies to develop new ones) .... but object to having them damage my equipment.

You cannot get rid from StarForce Protection since its code is written down in sh3.exe and in several dll-files SH3.
You can remove drivers StarForce Protection from system, but at start SH3 they will be again established.
Use NoDVD (CD).

Guys, don't get in trouble for me here. Thank you all for a civilized discussion here on a sensitive subject. I found it very helpful. I hope one day our games will be protected in some sort of friendlier manner.

People must be allowed to ask about this if they got problems with the Starforce protection system, and we know there are few. The removal tool is a legal download and help...
