Hi and welcome to Subsim
Yes it is possible to attack an enemy port but IIRC the enemy ports dont have too many ships in the stock game

And yes its more than possible to sink them

Hello and welcome to subsim.
It is very possible indeed.
If you play stock SH3 the ports will be empty as but if you play with one of the super mods GW1.1a or NYGM , UBWA, IUB you will find the harbours full of life and plenty of targets for your torpedos.
Hope this helps

Use electric torpedoes at their absolute maximum range -- steam torpedoes are likely to result in your death, but it's possible if you set them to slow and make seriously good time during your escape. Achieve a nearly perpendicular shot. Fire what you've got, and make an immediate about-face and start sneaking out the door. Stay nice and quiet while all the AI's head for the afflicted boat, far away from you.

The only thing that sucks about the ports...mines, sub nets, warships on top of you in shallow waters, sometime you sink the ships moored and you do not get credit because it does not sink completely. With that said, do you really want to take your crew on a pleasure cruise to hell? DARN RIGHT I DO!!! Good luck to you. I usually stay away from the ports. But hey, thats just me

aaahhhh shh.... this is the reason why I dont get credit after sneaking into Portland with LSH3 and having the Battleship sunk by 3 Torps and Flooding.

So I guess that if you really want to have fun inside ports sinking huge ships, you have to make them explode somehow. (target Magazines or Fuel Bunkers and hope for the best)

It is one of things when the ship hits bottom and that is it. No nothing but 4 empty torpedoe tubes. I'm not sure were the cut off is during the sinking process where you are credited.

Hello and welcome to SubSim

if you are playing GW or NYGM then yes do go ahead and raid ports. In the stock game ports are usually empty. If you do go to raid a port remember a few simple rules.

1. Use the weather to your advantage. Raid in bad weather or at night.
2. Go to periscope depth at about 20-25km from the harbour to avoid the patrol boats. Use silent running and be quick. Aim the ship you want hit it hard and get out as soon as possible.
3. I always hit the warships first. That way they cannot be used against you. After that merchants are easy targets.
4. Be very careful of mines and subnets. They can have you killed
5. Try to hit the targets at critical areas to avoid them flood and sit on the bottom of the sea, as you might lose renown.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

Yeah, what they said. Also you may get lucky and only have one or two patrol craft patrolling the harbor. This means the starboard watch is active and the larboard watch is resting. Put a torpedoe into the patrol sleeping at the dock, and they won't wake up when you sink the fat tanker. Some say a fish on a 300 tonner is a waste, but personally I like to buy the Admiral of the Yard a Beck's when I RETURN. He has never failed to replace that "wasted torp".

I would also like to say most ports can also be attacked on the surface, with the exception of Scapa,Firth of Forth, loch ewe, but at loch ewe just sail to the back of the gun installations and fire away.
If you feel adventerous have a sail across the altlantic and raid Norfolk, there's a carrier in there, also there's 2 light cruisers and a passenger liner in Dover.

Go to New York, I emptied my IXD2 there. To much to kill, including a fat, nice liner just below the statue of liberty.

Welcome aboard Renegado

There are loads of great harbours to raid (except in stock game)...I particularly like New York for the added scenic value...good hunting

I tried to sneak into Portland a few days ago in mid 1940 with the Campaign-Files of LSH3 and GW (the Rest). Thats where that thing with the Battleship happens. Except this it was quite exciting......mit those mods there are about 2 Liners in that harbour, 3 Troop Transports, a few cruisers and in the middle a Carrier and a Battleship.
(Realistic placement, t think, looks just like that one day on my vacation a few years ago, when a US-Carrier-Group made a stop at Funchal Harbour, Madeira, claiming the whole inside of the Port for itself with the Carrier and and 2 Ticonderoga-Cruisers)

Anyway, what really was fun was that it felt a bit like in that Stealth-Games like Hitman. I sneaked in unnoticed, passing by a T3-Tanker at the harbour entrance and gave it a little greeting from my aft tube.
It exploded immitiately, now this obviously caused panic as the WHOLE HARBOUR WOKE UP, about 5 or 6 Destroyers, Trawlers and Corvettes startet searching for me.

I still torpedoed the Carrier and the Battleship, with the Carrier sinking and the Battleship doing that annoying laying on the seafloor mentioned above.

And by the Way: I survived, but my boat was junk afterwards, "red" conning tower, aft tubes destroyed, flodding......
