Default Believe a crew management problem.

I am running SH3 patched to 1.4, no mods. I completed the Academy all excellent, and I am trying first career.
Mission proceed to patrol area AF87 and patrol for 24 hours. I completed all of the objectives assigned. I was assigned to a Type IIA Boat. I was patrolling and the boat stopped, all I get is cannot comply with order. Most of the crewman are red so what is wrong? I searched the thread and cannot figure it out.
Of course it could be something different bu I believe I am not managing .
I also don't know how to control or repair damage.

I would appreciate any help,

Well, they're dead if they're red. Is your boat damaged? You must have hit a mine, or run aground of something.

Red men=dead, red exclamation mark=fatigued and need to be rested in the crew quarters. Damage control requires men to be put in the damage control section, and you can not be in silent running or all repairs will stop.

Well if I hit a mine there was no explosion. Why did my boat quit answering bells?
I have not been able to find any explnation in the forums-yet.

You don't say whether you were surfaced or submerged.

Chances are it was a mine or the oxygen levels were exhausted.

Default Surfaced

I was on the surface patrolling, I had reached the area and had been there 24 hours. That completed the required objectives.
It was not a freeze up, no evidence of mines, planes, other vessels nor that I had run aground. It stopped and there were no engine sounds. I could go to various stations the annunciator worked but no response.
The message log read "Cannot comply".

With most of your men red/dead it has to be a mine.....you wouldn't normally notice them as they are tethered to hover below the surface of the water.

Have you tried to re run the patrol in the same area in an attempt to replicate the problem?

Default I'll try to be more clear.

I purchased this game through Sub Sim, according to the files it came patched t 1.4. I have not installed any mods of any kind. I practiced and passed all of the Academy Missions with excellent in each one.
I have now tried two careers, one in a type IIA and another in a type VIIB.
While in transient to the patrol areas, my crew members bar graph turns red, I believe it is fatigue. I have no contact with the enemy, I am in deep water and I try surfaced and submerged. I assume if I HIT a mine I would get the sound of an explosion and damage reports. None of this. In the IIA my engines stopped, I was on the surface and had completed all of the critical requirements, I was trying to find targets when it stopped, I could dive and surface just not move.
Many of you have written about the Commanders Edition of SH3, I Have only had SH3 a week and have no idea what the Commanders Edition is.
Some of you have written about turning off crew fatigue, well I cannot find where to do this. Please not I have been playing on this site a long time and my join date is not actual when I joined because I had to re-register- I have been around since the 90s and 688I.
I have read the manual and searched the forums, and I am getting frustrated. I have never had a Sim where I had to micro manage the crew. I am competent in 688I, Fleet Command, Sub Command, Dangerous Waters (Subs only) and Silent Hunter 4. I own Fast Attack, SH1, and SH2.
I know I sound stupid and I feel dam stupid, but I don't have a clue about solving my problem other than going back to my other Sims and putting this one on the shelf.
On configuring my crew I can't even find where to do it.

Thank you,

Ron Banks MMCM(SS), USN(Ret)

If you hit a mine and it kills you, you'll never know - it will just say that you're dead.

If you hit a mine and it doesn't kill you, all you'll get is a bunch of bad stuff happening, and no explanation.

It's not 'Commander's Edition', it's SH3 Commander. It's a completely separate tool that changes the way you play the game. You can adjust all sorts of in-game functions with the click of a button. You get realistic crew names, realistic names to ships you sink, realistic careers. It lets you edit your patrol logs yourself. It's a whole different game, and it doesn't require any work from you except to load it up and make some choices.

Oh, and it's also where you turn off crew fatigue.

Don't worry about being confused and frustrated. A lot of us are. And no, you don't sound stupid at all - just a little lost. And again, many of us feel the same way.

I dont think you could have hit a mine. I dont think mines are built into the original game which you say you are running with no mods.

It sounds like a crew micro mangement problem like you say and I suggest you install SH3 Commander from JSJones and switch off crew fatigue. You can also make some other changes to help you play like changing time compression to suit you best, and other things.

Dont give up on SHIII - I almost did when it first came out and I think it was also about the crew fatigue thing.

Good luck.

As mentioned before, if it is fatigue, you get a red exclamation point next to the icon of the crew member in the f7 screen. If the whole icon is red, you are dead, and it is usually because you hit a mine, or because you were running at a high time compression, and ran into something and/or were attacked by air.
After you have played with vanilla SH3 a few times , get SH3 CMDR
The readme is marvelous, detailed and exact. If you have any questions after dl land installing it, ask away; be forewarned, however, that JScones gets cranky if you haven't RTFM!
The same is true for JSGME, which allows you to make changes into the game and reverse them with a simple click.
These may seem complicated at first, but it is like making love; once you get the hang of it, it isn't all that complicated.
Don't give up on SH3/GWX3.0; It is better than all the above mentioned games combined.

Default Bravo/Zulu to each of you!

I want to thank each of you for all your help. I followed the advice and installed SH3 Commander and it made a great difference. I am still learning all it can do, but I'm enjoying SH3 more.

Again, Thank you,
