Get the first type IX or save for the better ones?

I'm planning on getting a type IX since my first career I carried a type VIIC, eventually pimped out but felt really hampered by the limited torpedo load, especially if I was on my way back from patrol and encountered a convoy while I only had 1-2 fish

The thing I'm wondering about- is it worth it to hold off and get the upgraded versions of the IX? the manual says they have even more torpedo stowage, and I know that when you get a new sub you lose all your previous upgrades, which is why I'm even holding off upgrading the VIIB(to save as much renown as possible).

I started in 1939, and so far even with my little VIIB it has been a killfest since I've been considerably better at playing this game since my first career. So I'm hoping to have the 9000 renown required for the type IX soon enough.
