Default Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 review: Quad Core is here!

I don't have any use for a quad core yet since most apps only use 1 core and having 2 cores like I have is sufficient - app uses one, OS uses the other. I guess if you use a multithreaded app though, quad core could be useful.

MS could code FSX to use one core for graphics, one core for physics, one core for traffic and the last core for...hmm...I don't know, bringing you hot coffee I guess.

Can't say that I'm blown away by the news considering very few games would benefit from it at current or in the immediate future.

My thoughts exactly. Even for MPEG-2 compression on my 4400+ X2, my encoder is multithreaded, but my frame server is single threaded, so I can only utilize 70% of my CPU power. Quad core won't help me and that app is what I would purchase it for if it did. For games, a CPU is not good at cranking out the gflops, so it wouldn't make a good physics proc either. A video card is much faster in that regard. Using a core for graphics is also not where a CPU shines. Dunno what would make a good app for a quad core CPU except in a server based environment where it needs to handle a ton of requests.

Does the fact that this CPU from Intel has double the cores over a Core 2 Duo CPU also mean more heat?

I'm waiting for the day when scientists lay all the blame for global warming on gamers and PC enthusiasts with their ever growing power guzzling and heat producing high spec systems. Heck, perhaps here in the UK there will be a Gamers Tax incorporated in Labours next enviromental policy.
