Virtual PC for WinXP 3.0 Home Media Edition
I'm wondering if anyone is running Virtual PC under ANY version of Windows XP 3.0? I'm still having trouble with SH1, SHCE and some other simulations using D-Fend Reloaded. I still have my OEM Win98 CD and I'm
wondering if anyone is running Win98 on Virtual PC using Windows XP? How does Virtual PC compare to emulators like WinAUE or VICE? How hard is it to move folders from WinXP to Windows 98 on Virtual PC? Are there any sound issues when using Virtual PC regarding drivers? Thanks! Christopher Tarana |

First off I don't use Virtual PC, but from what I have read it is not ideal for running old games that don't run on XP or later versions of Windows. It's something to do with drivers etc.
I do use WinUAE but the difference here, if I'm not mistaken, is that it emulates the actual hardware of the Amiga rather than just the operating system Workbench. Nemo

That's true, WinUAE and Vice do emulate both the software and the hardware. I was thinking more of how well Win98 would run under Virtual PC?

It depends which version of Virtual PC you install. See this wiki page with a table for overview on Guest OS versions.
(sorry, forgot link) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Virtual_PC p.s. I have run SH1 in a virtual pc (vpc 2007 iirc) using freedos as OS: http://www.freedos.org/ But I can't remember how I did it exactly. I think I used a pre-built virtual harddisk made by someone.

I've got about half the memory Microsoft recommends (512 MB RAM) so I'm going to move Virtual PC onto the back burner for now. Everything else was okay on my computer. I've reinstalled SH1 and SHCE under D-Fend Reloaded. I'm looking to restart some campaigns soon.
SH2 is running fine under WinXP and I cleared out those campaigns today. I want to re-install the Vicker's Oil Slick 3 and Vicker's Fireball Addon's. ChristopherT |

The problem with Virtual PC has been the graphics card emulation not being suitable for gaming, otherwise it works pretty well. You also need the Win98 OS as it's not part of the install.
Essentially you are delegating a portion of your HDD to run under a different OS and that portion is no longer available for normal use. I've installed it without problems before and then ran into the graphics card wall. Maybe it's been improved since then.

Thanks, Buddahaid! That's good to know. I do have a copy of my original Win98 CD still that I bought with my P2 computer.
