Default Neutral ships October 1939

I just picked up where I left off a few months ago with a patrol in October 1939 out of Wilhelmshaven. Only modification is GWX. I've had earlier incidents in this career sinking neutral ships. I remember a slew of messages outlining the fast-changing rules of engagement in the previous patrol. I thought the way they settled out, anything British is fair game going into this patrol.

Almost as soon as I hit my assigned grid, I came across a nice, juicy, blacked out Large Merchant on a night with no moon. Because of my previous problems with neutral ships, I did exterior view and went right up to the Large Merchant in the inky blackness and clearly observed a red flag with the Union Jack in the corner. Couldn't see and other markings in the red field, but it shouldn't matter in October 1939, right?

Got it towards the rear with a torpedo and it limped over the line out of my assigned patrol area. Seas were too rough to man the deck gun. It was only making 1 knot so it eventually sank within sight.

I went to save and exit some time later, and the game scored ten thousand whatever tons of NEUTRAL shipping sunk. Wtf? Is it because it was unescorted? What's the date you can start sinking British singles? ::wink wink:: ::nudge nudge:: Say no more!

No, it shouldn't matter. Britain becomes an enemy on September 3, 1939, and it doesn't matter if they are escorted or not. I'm not sure what is wrong, but it sounds like something is.

Unless you misread the flag, or the date somehow, then you may need to reinstall the game. I hope it doesn't come to that. Hopefully someone else will have a better answer.

Might have been an US merchant. In pitch dark the flag looks like the British.

Where was your asigned grid? Where did you sink the merchant?

North/South of Ireland by chance? If Northern Sea - probably no US vessel.

According to B-Dienst, an American C2 “Orinocco” hit a British mine in October 1939, south-west of Ireland. It was transporting pudding powder from Panama.
All hands survived and made it to Ireland.

The flag identification in SH3 is apita.

At first glance when I exit SH3, it looks like all that I've sunk is neutral.
But the # and tonnage lines on the right are slightly higher on my screen than the words on the left.

I exited once, saw that, and I'm thinking "that is such bogus garbage, there were nothing but hos..... Ohh, the lines are off a bit. Ok, good."

Any chance it might be that?

So I just tried a vanilla install. Launched a torpedo across the bay first time I hit Enter on the numberpad to kill time compression. Then I did it again in my patrol grid. Crew is quiet. I think mutiny is imminent. GWX has it hardwired into my brain to hit that key when a contact pops up.

My screen is huge, so I have a ways to go between the list and the #s is the only reason I thought of it.

Worst case scenario: if it is a lone merchant and I'm not sure, I'll run on the surface, or maybe fire a few shots across the bow/stern with my AA/deck gun... if they point a spot light at me, then they are hostile.

But then again, I am EXTREMELY aggresive, and will often take the heavy AA and use that (with crew on the deck gun) while ordering heading/speed changes while dismantling convoys.

and before anyone says anything, yes I'm nuts. MUAHAHAHAHAHAha.......haha.....ha.

I'm done.

maybe.
