Default Can I *really* suck this bad at DW??

I've finally gotten the full game a few days ago. I've been playing the demo for a while, though. Half the time, I can't even sink the sub in the MH60 demo with "show truth" checked in the option" lol. The torpedos seem to have a mind of their own, and go off in random directions even though I've assigned them to the sub.

I'm starting to read the manual, and will hopefully get a better handle on how to do certain things. In the meantime, I just thought I'd entertain you guys with my newbishness.

Feel free to ask any questions. The group of people here is really good about that sort of thing.

It will get better .. you need to know a lot. Game also has some wierd behaviours.
You just have to learn what it can, and what it can't.

Thanks for the offer of help, folks. I'm sure I will avail myself of that in due time...if I can cut my questions down to a managable number.

A moral victory yesterday...I actually successfully completed the MH-60 demo 3 times w/o cheating! I've finally gotten the hang of the sonabouys display. Still, I had several occurrences of torpoes gone awry, even though I assigned them to my manual solution. Seems the head off in some random direction half the time.

Make sure you hit the assign button after entering the presets.

Heh, you think you suck...put me in the OHP. My shortest survival time was five minutes...a Backfire put a Kitchen in me before I'd figured out that I hadn't put my radar on...

Thankfully, I suck a little less at the MH-60 and P-3, and the subs I've got a fairly good idea on thanks to Fast Attack and Sub Command.

Everyone goofs up with torpedoes occaisionally. That's why I always make sure I have a back up one just in case of botch the first shot, I can rapidly follow on with a second one that's what I wanted it to be in the first place. :-)

I'm pretty sure I'm assigning the torpedoes...from the F2/cockpit view, I click on the track I want to shoot, then hit the "assign" button over on the right in that display...but it only seems to work about 50% of the time, and when it doesn't, the torpedo heads off towards some of the other contacts, it seems. Weird...but it could very well be (most likely is) user error.

Still, I'm better off than before, if only by a smidgeon.

Uh .. don't use MH60 autocrew to setup torpedo. Do it manualy. Autocrew here does really stupid decisions. On subs it's quite usable, but not on MH60.

So first you have to disable autocrew on that station. Click on icon in upper left corner. Now you can set all torpedo parameters.

You can choose active or passive homing. Select active for subs, pasive for surfaces (most usually, you can surprise sub with passive sometimes, humans mostly).

Then choose search patern. Choose snake for shooting from large distance. Choose circle for dropping the torpedo right on sub (especially if you use LWAMI mod).

Then set depths .. cieling, bottom, search depth .. should be quite clear what it means. Search depth should be like 200ft max, or half of the bottom depth. Don't worry, seeker's detection cone is quite wide. Also consider maximum target depth and maximum torpedo depth. No use of setting bottom more than that. For subs also set at least 20ft of cieling, or even more, so you don't hit friendly or neutral surface contacts. Subs will rarely evade to shallow water (althought it usually works).

Then either assign target, or, if no target is assigned, you can set runout bearing manualy.

Then choose Run To Enable distance. Check target distance, subtract 1000yds (or more if you are unsure with position). Or, if you drop torpedo right on sub, like you should with HELO, set 0. 0 will always work.

Then click fire.

That's it .. it just can't miss.

Also note, that if you don't have autocrew enabled on this station, you can still use 'engage with' command on nav map. But since nobody presets the torpedoes, they will miss in 99%.
