Default Can't seem to sink the Nelson :(

Hi all,

Strange problem here...

It's around Nov. 8th 1939, and I snuck my way into Lock Ewe (sp?) to see what I could see. Low and behold I found me a sitting duck battleship called the nelson (or maybe that's nelson class....)

Anyway, I managed to get within 500 meters and let loose with all 4 tubes, instantly I turned tail to get the H E ! ! out of dodge, and for good measure fired my aft tube.

All 5 torps hit, all five exploded, but the BS is only listing to one side and has not sunk.

Well I stirred up a hornets nest of destroyer's, and barely managed to sneak back out into deeper waters.

Now I'm wondering if I need to go back and finish the job... I have 1 fore and 2 aft torps left...

Any thoughts on this situation?

You using GW mod?

It uses the NYGM ship damage model, so it might take several hours, if not days before it'll sink, IF it will.

IMO though a Nelson is worth the effort of sneaking in again.

I have no problem sinking her (just gets boreing after a while)I usually hit her just under the 3rd turret and she goes down.Went in there last night (new career)took out a nelson,T2,C2,and a small merchant only had 6 fish when I entered the Loch 4 forward 2 aft (feb 40)used up all my fish and as I was sailing out a TF was sailing in a Carrier,a Dido, and about 6 escorts and there was nothing I could do lucky for me they must have reached there last waypoint because they vanished right in front of me.

You have to make it explode. If it just settles on the bottom without blowing up you won't get credit for it.

That means if it is in very shallow waters and it not reach the hit points needed to be considered destroyed, and it flood up to rest on the botom but partially out of water... there are not credits ?

What is the solution ? Launch more torps until it reach the destroy hit points ?

I am wrong ?

I must say, I owe you a beer. A very BIG one.

Since I was in the vicinity of Loch Eve in my patrol, and the date was 16 Nov 1939, I thought that maybe that Nelson was still there. . .

Sure as hell it was. I made it in and sank it and headed out, and was not a single time attacked.

I hit her in the ammo bunkers, and she exploded into fireworks and sank rather quickly.

After that all my torps were gone (I sank her with one) and I headed back to Wilhelmshaven.

After a nerv-pressing journey with 19% Hull Integrity and no torps or deck gun ammo whatsoever I came home safely.

Thanks to you U-53 now has 3 new, very expensive Officers, 4 new top-class Petty Officers and a bunch of fine, new crewmen.

And a new toy too. . .

An engine upgrade!

If using GW (which IIRC uses the NYGM 1.03 ship damage model) Or NYGM TW2.01 the "health points" are no longer there...as it is quite unrealistic to sink a vessel only targeting the brige or sometyhing like that and just wait for the HP to go down and watch the ship explode and sink in 5-10seconds. So with NYGM ship damage modelling the ship compartments (different from vanilla too) have to be flooded to sink the ship. There is a possibility for a "Silver bullet" shot but the areas are smaller. Those I bet in are usually the fuel bunkers and ammo dumps. Also I highly recommend using the impact detonator to get better effect for your torps, if not doing so already.

Hope this helps...and if am totally wrong please someone correct me.
Prost!

SWEET!!

I'm glad I could help out, and grat's on the ammo shot!

I'm using *almost* the stock game, I don't have any mods that tweak the dmg model, I just have some visual type mods (on that changes the map background to make it look more like paper, etc.).

When I stumbled upon her, I was facing the same way she was, so I had to come hard stb, while my sub was turning I was fireing torps (basically a straifing manuver), so my first 4 torps hit her aft, mid mid for... THen my aft tub hit her under the 3rd turret.

After that I had 3 destroyer's chasing me out... I barely managed to slip away, sometimes I think I was just darn lucky, cause one of those destroyer's started to Depth Charge the area I HAD been in when I fired, at the time I was probly 200 meters away and scurrying away.

Well it felt really good to finally sink her!!!

Now I just want to get the bigger boats and have some more fun!

I am using War Ace campaign files yet now, but with NYGM Ship Damage 1.36 beta.

My question was ... just imagine the ship has only 1 meter under the keel. You cause some damage and flooding enought to sink it, but it finish sitting on the floor with lot of ship out of water ....

Will you receive a credit for the kill ?
