Default AV software

I've been using Nortons AV for a long time now but have never been entirely happy with it and I'm looking for something new. Boxed or downloaded - I'm easy. What do you guys use? Any recommendations?

AVG free edition. Have had no regrets since dumping NAV on several PCs a few months ago.

Noticeable performance improvements.

The problem with AVG is updates are provided on a low priority basis.

Only one automatic daily update and no technical support. With that aside AVG is in the top five free anti-virus programmes.

It's always best to run a once a month online scan to cross check your own one.

1. How many daily updates does NAV do? I recall 1 a day there, too.

2. Have you ever tried dealing with Syamtec support? I've never needed support for AVG, versus several issues I've had to contact Symantec about or comb through their knowledgebase.

1. I got Norton and I have noticed on some days I get more than one up date. I've never had problems with Norton at all for the 3 years I've had it. May be it the luck of the draw.

2. No problem with their help centre, I have always found them to be fast in solving the problem.

Syamtec is a hit and miss with people who have had different results from them from to but I confess near the end of the year I am reviewing the renew cost.

Luck of the draw.

I only used them twice and both cases got an English speaking person.

I can also vouch for AVG.

I can't afford to connect my Windows computer to the internet, so it is strictly limited to off-line updates. Symantec won't let you update any of their current programs like that, but all of the AVG updates are available for download. Both program updates, and virus definitions. You just put all of them into one folder and point the update to the folder.

I also find it's detection capabilities are more advanced. It catches things in compressed files that Symantec Corporate 9.xxx would not.

I've heard good things about AVG before, I have to say. I might give that one a try. $38 for a two year licence is not too bad. I'll try the free month before I buy though.
