At this time does anyone know what the impact will be on us when the new Microsoft Operating System comes out next year?
I was wondering if we will all have to buy new simulations or will XP work for a while? To be honest, I am getting older, 66 in September, and I really don't want to start all over. Thanks, Ron Banks MMCM(SS), USN(Ret) |

There is nothing like starting over, even in the worst case, you can still keep more than one OS installed

I wish I knew how to install more than one operating system. Don't forget I can remember when the pocket calculator was a big deal, I even remember gas at 25 cents a gallon. ![]() If you have the time tell me how to install more than one operating system. Sub Sailor |

Ron,
To be honest, it wouldn't be worth having a multi-boot configuration for a typical computer user. I have a feeling that you want to have Windows 98SE again. ![]() You can find old "outdated" machines cheap and if you still have the 98SE disk, just install it on the old system. Granted, an old system now a days is a PIII 750 or even into the 1.xx MHz. If you think about it, having that type of system with W98SE is great compaired to what the OS was typically installed on back in 99-01. As in all new OS's that Microsoft comes out with, give the Vista another 1-2 years from release before they get "most" of the bugs out. That leads into another topic of hardware requirements... Here they are for Windows Vista...

Well then, there is a question why upgrading to the new OS. i dont know much about it, but as i know with the direct X 10 available only for Vista, MS will eventually force us to do so, but i think an older OS like XP should be fine for some years.... until then they may fix all compatibility issues, >if any<.. i remember back when XP came out, lots of games were not working on it, but after some time they fixed the majority.
As i said, i would not bother upgrading to Vista at the moment it comes out, as i learned to be a bit sceptical about MS's "improvements" ![]() edit: Also, as DW is relatively new ga.. software ![]() ![]() |

Yeah...don't bother with trying to put another O/S on your PC...I tried it with 98SE...partitioned a 4gig space of Fat32...didn't work, messed up the system...reformat was in order. I wanted 98 so I could play some old games...
![]() ![]() Forget DX10...the Vista will be the deathbed for the PC as a gaming machine. Just what Bill wants...so we buy that piece of crap XBox 360. Is there another planet where greedy twerps don't make all the important decisions?...cos I wanna go there. ![]() |

Gentleman;
I feel much better as I just used to XP, as Sonar can attest to. No Joe I gave up going back to 98, I just downloaded the DL for Sonalyst and 688i works fine. I miss my old SHCE, but the steps to play it is beyond me. I am looking foward to DW when the new LWAMI patch comes out, it is suppose to fix Helo pinging at 128 knts. Ho I have another questions, I was playing Bill's "Barents Sea Loiter" and the Akula I was doing 30 knots at 180 feet and no cavitating. Now come on, that is impossible for any sub, but I could not pick up the SAG until it was about 20 nm and it was running a steady 20 knots. I will generate another post to LWAMI to check that. I guess it's possible that AI does not cavitate. Thanks for you help, Sub Sailor |

As far as the cavitation issues, I'm not sure, but the AI definately does cavitate. I just set an Akula I at 180ft and 30kts and it was indeed cavitating. The question is, was it not caving, or did you not detect it? There are any number of reasons why it was not detectable for you in that situation. Also, just to be clear, LWAMI is a *mod*, and the updates that SCS releases are *patches*. And thanks for your help with LWAMI! Cheers, David

There may have been optimizations since, but it was posted that: running absolutely nothing on top of a standard vista installation, puts 800Mb ram to use. It wouldn't surprise me if Vista becomes a big flop; in fact I hope it does.

David;
When I used the term mod I was just being generic to cover changes in a simulation. I truly appreciate the work you are doing, you are doing for DW what the gentleman did for SC. DW will develop into what it was intended to be. I am glad to help out anyway I can, my knowledge of subs covers from 1962 to 1982, so any boats after 82 is only known through my contacts and reading. But my experience does cover the bulk of the Cold War from a Submariners perspective, both SSN and SSBNs. So I will keep providing feedback, I don't have the knowledge to modify these sims, but hopefully I can provide useful knowledge. Thanks for you your hard work, Ron Banks MMCM(SS), USN(Ret) |

If you merely want different Windows versions, try here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...multiboot.mspx For added Linux: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/os.html#OSINSTALL http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/os.html#OSBOOT However, Linux probably will not help much. A few things that can help are: Emulators: dosbox.sourceforge.net for the really old DOS programs. You can also find emulators for various other systems such as Amiga (though you'll probably have to pay for legal ROMs) Some newer DOS games are a bit too demanding for DOSBox. In some cases, the only problem is the sound. If you're on 2000 or XP, VDMS can help. It only emulates the sound. http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/ There's a newer version, still in beta, but with superior capabilities, and an installer that includes some extra optional programs, for example mscdex emulation. http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=2071 Read the warning before starting. Beta software. But I like it. Then, for older Windows games, some will work with the compatibility options you can set in the program properties in Windows. There's also an application compatibility toolkit for the difficult cases, but it takes some work and can be a big download (very big if you don't have .NET already. In some cases, the only part of the software that is incompatible with newer Windows versions is the copy protection. Look for no-CD patches. |

I need to find an old 486 so I can play my COMPLETE set of Great Naval Battles of the North Atlantic. I have the original game, the America in the Atlantic and SuperShips Plan Z expansions, as well as the Careers Expansion.
It was so good...
