Playing in OZ: The awesome story of Batavia ! (Joop vd Ende: bring it to Holland iyp)
In Brief:

In 1628 a Dutch merchant vessel bound for Java is shipwrecked off the coast of Western Australia and the survivors are marooned on a barren island. One group, under the leadership of the steadfast Wiebbe, puts to sea in search of water and sustenance while the others, in the thrall of the mutinous Jeronimus Cornelisz, become subjects in a little hell. Meanwhile, the expedition's leader, Pelsaert, goes out alone to seek rescue and eventually, redemption. With an outstanding cast of singers, the Opera Australia Chorus and Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, director Lindy Hume and composer/conductor Richard Mills will once again bring to life this story of triumph over evil.

About this Production:

Hailed as one of the most significant works created in Australia, Batavia premiered to standing ovations and critical acclaim during the 2001 Arts Festival in Melbourne, subsequently winning three Helpmann Awards and six Green Room Awards, and the 2004 Perth International Arts Festival. In 2006 this outstanding work will be presented in Sydney for the first time. It features the same creative team that led The Australian to hail Batavia as "a breathtaking musical and dramatic presentation of epic scale". Michael Lewis stars as Cornelisz in "one of the central roles in his distinguished career" (The Australian) and Bruce Martin brings a "Wagnerian majesty" (The Bulletin) to his portrayal of Pelsaert.

"The theatre is a sacred ritual space in which we question and explore what it is to be human, in all its complexity. Batavia deals with those questions which, for me, are at the centre of trying to make sense of life." – RICHARD MILLS, Composer/Conductor.

Sung in English with English surtitles.
Three hours and ten minutes including one 20-minute interval.

Warning: Contains a scene portraying sexual assault and strong violence. (sexual assault ?? :hmm: )
