Default I must be unlucky.

it's March of 1940 and apparently the army has taken Norway. That's excellent news because now I can dock in Bergen but the KdU must be nuts. They sent me in my type II to patrol AN 39 (if I recall correctly), the bit just south of Kristiansand. There's nothing there. Just a bunch of neutral or friendly ships. It's almost a pleasure cruise. But then, out of nowhere, I get the usual updates for random boats, and other erata when what comes in from Helmut, the radio man, but a report of a "large stationary task force" up near Trondheim. With not a single fish fired and 75% fuel, I make my patrol report (Be more agressive, KdU says; feh!). Now, after a week of travel, this is the part that got interesting.

I found a Fiji cruiser, 2 escort DDs and 3 troop transports.

Of course, I'm in 16m deep water, the weather is piss poor and none of those boats were making any noise when I was sailing in looking for them. I practically ran in to a troop transport. Had to cut it hard to the left, dive and even then, I think we scraped a barnacle off. No collision, but man it was close. I had to sail around a little to find the other 2 transports and then, as I was sailing off to the prerequisite 301 meters, I saw a light escort destroyer but the shape was all wrong, it was too long. Sailing silently around it's aft, I found the Fiji. I'd already lost sight of the troop transports. The damned weather.

Unfortunately, I had to stop there; it was 1am real time. I'm looking forward to getting back to the save where I hadn't yet entered the area too closely. I think I'll target the fiji and the DD, see if I can eliminate the threats before I move to the troop boats. This little mission would be fantastic for a single mission, I think. Maybe it's time to investigate a mission creator. Too bad there's not a way to load a saved game to display all the boats so I could copy it to a single. This is really challenging. Maybe after this, I'll have enough renown to buy a VII boot.

Props to the GW team; I'm sure they had a hand in telling the game about this huge task force. it's the only mod I use aaside from commander.

Wow, that's pretty interesting. I was in a VIIB, using GW and I ran into the same task force. When I got the message from my radio operator, I thought it said friendly task force, which I thought made sense being that Germany was invading Norway, I fgured they'd need troop transports, but upon closer inspection I saw the British flag! Visibility was piss poor as you say: heavy fog with heavy rain and winds 15m/s. This actually helped me somewhat, being that it was shallow waters and there were quite a few escorts moored there. In all I think I took out the three transports and two destroyers, the rest were victims of the Luftwaffe! Pretty crazy air battle, which happened the next morning from my nightly escapades. The wind died down, waves rested at 6m/s and fog disappeared. As the sun came up, I hear gunfire coming from the surface, I know it's not me so I raise my observation scope and spot Stukas, diving in for the kill. They took out the Fiji and I think one destroyer.

That's awesome.

It's nice when things happen in game that show some kind of AI awareness.

Serves those Limey's right for coming close to our newly won territory!

I've gone for that TF before. Same thing for me - foggy, rainy weather, and drifting around in shallow water in some Fjiord- a stationary TF with Fiji, troop trans, and a few escorts. I attacked the fiji and the transports, sinking the fiji. Then I turned and fled the for open sea at flank, thiinking that I could use the fog to hide my escape. About three minutes later, to my horror, a destroyer looms out of the fog in front of me, and proceeds to inflict fatal damage upon me with its cannons. That was the end of that boot.
