Default Soundman incompetence

I was playing the Narvik scenario. In a type IID....love that boat!

Made an attack on the Warspite, hit her with two eels...she did not go down.... anyway, after the escorts then attacked me which I evaded, I asked the hydrophone operator for continuous reports from nearest warship, he kept reporting a contact that was receding at long range....Ok! I made it!

NO! he failed to inform me of the destroyer that was 600m away, I only heard it when his props washed overhead

Luckly, his aim was poor, so I went silent and bottomed out the boat in shallow water...29m. and just waited for them to go..took about an hour.

Anyway, are the hydrophone operators always this lousy? I had a CPO with 150/200 experience and he was not fatigued..I should say he did not have a sonar rating though....

Sad to say....but you're better off doing your own listening. He does have a tin ear for prop noises.

I've this problem too. It is possible that Rub1.45 has modded this. Maybe the hydrophones don't work within 1000m or something. An hydrophone upgrade might be necessary. I don't know, I'm only guessing. I agree with you, it's strange.

What type of Hydrophone does the Typ II have? If it has the earlier one (sensors on the port and starboard side of the bow) then that may be the restriction.

He doesn't report what you can see...

Early hydrophone. I checked myself. Hydrophone works great! I heard the contact very easily.

Just don't understand why the soundman did not report it as the contact was VERY loud!

Or possibly if you told him to follow the nearest contact, he kept following it even when it wasn't the nearest any more.

It does not matter if he is sonar rated and 200-300 and later 350-300 mine is an idiot.
If I ask for a warship continuous report he gives me one that has no relevance to our survival.
There is no captain’s Luger for which I could take the needed action that would have the next guy paying closer attention!!!.
Seriously he also gives me reports when I have no use for them. If I order a crash dive and have no fish left he starts singing out every merchant contact from Norway to Japan and will not shut up.
I usually move him out and listen myself with the sonar empty.
If there are only two escorts that can be made or on that rare occasion he can not hear something irrelevant, his preference, I can get a constant report on one from him while I listen for the other manually and increase my survival chances. But, that is rare and I usually put him to bed or in damage control so he stops updating on merchant ships 200 meters above us.
They fixed it so he was active again after 1.3 screwed him up but frankly they did not actually fix him to be of much help

Lets assume that the files are messed up by the patches or mods.

Than there are three things that might be happening:

1 the crew files are messed up (detection changes are low or something) <--

2 the sensor files don't work correct

3 Both the crew and the sensor files are messed up.

It's probably the first because of the random effect. At least that's what I'm guessing....
