Default Aiming Torpedos

So when you are aiming at a target that is moving, how do you know how far in front of the target to point and release the torp? Is it just a guessing game or is there an exact science to it? And I have no idea how to use that torpedo screen. There is a ton of knobs on there that I have no idea what they do so maybe that's part of my problem.

I'm only in training and I just released about 6 torps, only one of which connected which i'm assuming is pretty sad.

Check the community manual

http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii

Your first decision is to choose between automatic targeting or manual targeting... This choice is made before you go out on each mission, in the realism setting.

Start off with the automatic targeting, i´d say...

Good luck !!

Hey trenken, I hear you buddy. I got this game right before Christmas and the first thing I did was check for updates, went to the Ubi website and saw the Subsim.com logo...hmm I said...they look legit. So here I am, never played a sim period...106,586 tons/92% realism on my 45th patrol doesn't lie. You've found yourself this far so I'm not worried about you.

Basically, being that your in the training missions, it doesn't prompt you about realism settings(for me it did'nt) so go to career or single missions and change the realism to what you feel is right and go back to the torp training scenario(which is more difficult than the career mode because every ship starts off in a different direction ). For me, I wanted to get every ship because it gives you a head start on renown if you do well on each of the five training scenarios. Listen to Canimo and use Wazoo's guide, I've used every method there and I personally like plotting a ship's speed and heading at a dead stop and fast 90 advanced manual targeting. Before using these methods on any ship, sink the one at a dead stop, it will speed up so don't use anything complicated in the TDC , a no gyro, no frills shot, fast setting, impact det. is fine, depth at default. Fire at about 500m away from him(torp's arm at 300m) and by the time he sees the bubble trail it'll be too late.

Go for the C2 cargo after that which is behind the recently sunken ship using the manual settings outlined by Wazoo, you'll surprise yourself...after that, being that none of the merchants have deck guns(they will later in the war) I went on the surface and finished off the rest of the ships, chasing them down, 45 deg. off their stern using magnetic shots which I just estimated.

You should get about 1500 renown at the beginning of your career to give you a head start on that VIIB

Don't be surprised if you don't master the manual method within six hours of playing that training sim, although half of it was spent looking at that slow loading screen

Thanks Tonnage. Yeah I didn't expect to master much of anything just yet. Haven't even touched career mode. I Was just kind of hoping to learn as much as I can right now in preparation for career mode. but I know most of my learning will be hands-on in career mode. Everyone here has proven so helpful. Great community!

1. Read manuals, wiki etc.
2. Read wiki, manuals, etc.
3. Start reading old Subsim threads
...
4. At fist use automatic targeting
5. When close enough to an enemy ship (say less than 1500 m) through the periscope view (F3) lock target with "L" and press enter to fire.

Wazoo's guides on manual targeting are good. Step by step.

That can help too,

but don´t lock if you are trying to hit a specific part of the ship (fuel tanks, ammo bunker, etc. ), otherwise you are going to always hit the same part of the ship (sometimes you just dont want it) !!
