Default historical question

Hi

I know the uboats hadn't permission to attack french ships at the beginning of the war.

Anybody know when they'd this permission ?

Thanks

Well, the point of that was due to Hitler hoping that he would persuade France to make peace. I believe that once the invasion of France started in May 1940, there was no more turning back - so that must be when the restrictions were lifted.

You know, this is a good question. I finally got a download of all the flags so I at least know who I'm shooting at (or about to). But I'm not sure about who gets included in the 'enemies' list, and when. I've been letting Norway go, but sinking all English ships. At what point did Hitler give the "free range" order?

Well, I believe that hitting the F1 key will show you a list of all the countries and when they became enemy combatants (not sure if that was stock game or a mod like RUB that does that). There were also various orders during the first few months of the war about allowing attacks on neutrals in certain circumstances and not in others, but none of that seems to be modeled in the game as far as the renown impact goes. One approach to "solving" this is just to mod the .cfg files to remove the renown penalty for sinking neutrals, and just exercise your own discretion - this is basically what I do - i.e., be careful about confirming identity of lone merchants and not attacking neutrals, but not worrying about it if they're in convoys (especially armed or escorted convoys) as they aren't acting as neutrals in those cases and are fair game to be attacked (and you shouldn't lose renown in those cases, IMHO).

Good luck and good hunting!

I AGREE with panthercules
I've been doing some research.....Germany setup a "War Zone"
around England in 1940. In 2 books i looked up it stated that anything in that Zone was Fair game. I make ssure to get close enough th check the FLAG.......don't want to sink one of "Our Own"....

Funny, I've never hit the F1 key (which is listed as "Help"). I'll give that a try.

Once I determine the ship is not "one of ours", it's almost a done deal, unless, as I mentioned, it is Norway. But I just hate letting any good shot go by after spending valuable time getting into position - and close enough to see who it is.

Actually, I think I've sunk some 'neutrals' by accident and never heard anything about it. It just counted toward my tonnage. If you are penalized renown, does it show somewhere in your 'end-of-patrol' report? In other words, are you made aware of points lost?

Still early in the war, I've been really successful. Even with dud torpedos. I think I'm still in about the 40's or so.

When you Dock.....and Hit "Escape" to end your mission......it should bring you to a Screen that gives you totals for that "Patrol"
Look at Neutral Shipping Sunk. This is a Minus to your Tonnage score...(If i'm not mistaken)......which will effect your Renown....

Ok Hawk. I'll make a note to remember to check it out. Thanks. I'm in the process of returning from a (if I may say so...) highly successful patrol. I think I might have sunk a neutral ship (ahem, or two...).

BTW, cool signature.

One of the first patrols I ever went on I was a little overzealous and fired at a ship before I identified whose it was. As I got a little closer I realized it was a German merchant!?!?!

DOH!! I'm going to have a lot of explaining to do!

I had the event camera on and the torpedo hit but was a dude! Bounced right off.

Boy, oh boy did I breath a sigh of relief.

I'm almost positive those "order of battle" lists in the help screen are added with certain mods.

Mods eh? Well, I downloaded a bunch of them this morning, but I'm going to load them on my laptop first. Back when I was unable to load SH3 on my desktop and I was dying to "get in the fight", I found it loaded just fine on my laptop so my first experiences were there. Now that I finally got the desktop working, I've not used the laptop at all. So there is where I'll do the experimentation. If all goes well there, I'll load some of the stuff here.
