Default Star shells

Hey folks! I've been lurking for a while and decided to register for this forum, so this is my first post.

I've been playing SHIII for about 3 months and have learned much from this forum. I appreciate the knowledge and camraderie this group offers.

I've completed probably 20 patrols over three careers and have experimented with a few types of boats. I typically operate at 14% realism, so I'm certainly no Uber captain.

I do have a question I've never seen in the forum. What are star shells for? I fired one once and it looked kind of like an aerial flare as I recall.
I'm proud to be aboard!
Thanks in advance for your input.

They are for ILLUMINATION mein freund!

They are very effective too. We used starshell cannon rounds in my Artillery unit on occasion. Magnesium burns very bright.

Illumination, AND for shooting at ships when you're out of the AP and HE rounds...

It works well!

Ok...thanks, folks!

Hey, apparently I'm a bilge rat! LOL!
Does one get promoted to torpedoman, medic, etc. by number of posts or is this something that can be edited? It appears some posters have custom "faces" by their names.

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I haven't seen it. Is there a good forum/FAQ for newbie questions like this?

Thanks in advance for your cooperation!
