I recently installed the LWAMI realism mod - great stuff.
I've been playing a scenario that has water currents set. It's a 5 knot 100 degree current. With a sub going 5 knots at a heading of 270 pressing alt-h reveals an actual path of around 200 or so. Increasing speed of the sub decreases the impact of the current as it should. Now in real life I know currents impact course. But so much? I don't remember having currents impact course so much with out the mod. Did the mod change the way current impacts naval platforms or was it always in there and I just never noticed.

That behavior is in the physics engine, so other than changing the physical parameters of the objects in the database, there is no way to change these effects.
So, this effect has always been in the game (well, at least has always been in DW 1.03). You should be aware that it's generally considered that the current and wind models aren't particularly well implimented, so most mission designers don't use the current features. Cheers, David
