So I was absolutely hooked on Silent Hunter III back in the day. I loved the freedom and the piratic aspect of going out reaving for tonnage. I have a newish microcomputer and am getting back into gaming.
What game would you recommend to scratch the old silent hunter itch? Should I try one of the mods that updates the SH3 graphics? Cold water? UBOAT? Wolfpack? Some SH4 mods? Some things to consider - I only want to play single player -I really liked the fact you got to know and upgrade your men in SH3 - I don't have just a ton of time and probably don't need something that ALL THAT more complicated than SH3. I would really appreciate any input from you guys I am antsy to get back under the water |

You are on the SH3 forum. So you know the answer.
Make sure you take a look at Wolfpack345 and Tonci87 on youtube. Wolfpack plays most subsims but keeps coming back to SH3. Seems to me the state of the supermod art these days is a friendly contest between OneAlex's version of GWX and Fifi's enhanced hardcore version of NYGM. LSH gets an honourable mention as the first to really polish the game graphics but was always a bit too easy IMHO. I think Onealex wins for someone new or returning to the game as it is a fairly painless install. |

I'll give you both answers. Actually there is nothing wrong with the vanilla versions, but some added value has been created in the mods.
I would pick the Silent Hunter 3 and the OneAlex mod. It looks good and has the advantage of being easier to install without playing with installing a group of mods with JSGME. OR Silent Hunter 4 with the Fall of the Rising Sun (FOTRS) or FOTRSU mod packages. Also looks very attractive, plays nice on 1920x1080 screens. If you like the American subs over playing the German side, it can be attractive. I play both of them and enjoy them. But I have never yet completed a full career on either of them. Still trying. |

If you want to play a German campaign with better graphics than SH3, I recommend Operation Monsun for SH4:
https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/sho...d.php?t=134922 It has a WWII Atlantic German campaign for SH4 despite the name - so it's not just Monsun boats! It has Type II, Type VII, and Type IX campaigns & missions. It's easy to get started IMO; it's easy to master the Silent Hunter 4 controls if you have experience with Silent Hunter 3. Of course, mastering the game as a whole and surviving past 1943 is a huge challenge but that's the way it should be. ![]() Furthermore, be advised that a new version of GWX is being worked on, although it isn't close to release - it will be a very large improvement: https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/sho...d.php?t=252967 Good to see you returning to subsim, and welcome! ![]() |
