I recall a theory that a coal fire in bunker of the Titanic may have exacerbated the iceberg strike that sank the vessel in 1912 by weakening the steel plates. While the fire was glossed over during the British Inquiry following the ship's sinking, Molony found a New York newspaper article featuring John Dilley, who was a fireman onboard the ship.
The firemen were told not to tell passengers or talk about the fire, which according to the Dilley burned the first few days of the voyage. “From the day we sailed the Titanic was on fire," according to the Dilley.
Molony said research suggests the coal fire was burning at over 1800 degrees Fahrenheit and may have warped the steel and made it brittle. The Titanic was designed to sink slowly enough that other ships could reach it and save passengers onboard, but the damage from the fire likely accelerated the ship's sinking

At least two decks stand between the fire and the roughly 1 million gallons of fuel on the big-deck amphib at Naval Base San Diego.

But I don't think this fire injured the hull, just the flight decks perhaps and the hull is still in fine shape to be used as a ship of Mercy instead of a warship.

Navy Will Decommission Fire-Damaged Bonhomme Richard

SAN DIEGO — The Navy said Monday that it will decommission a warship docked off San Diego after suspected arson caused extensive damage, making it too expensive to restore.

Fully repairing the USS Bonhomme Richard to warfighting capabilities would cost $2.5 billion to $3 billion and take five to seven years, said Rear Adm. Eric H. Ver Hage of the Navy Regional Maintenance Center.

Still would make a nice ship of mercy
