Default Can't hit the broad side of a barn

So I'm not new to the Silent Hunter series, but I am new to TWoS mod. I think we're all familiar with the incomprehensible mess that was the 'TDC' in vanilla SH5, so I was extremely excited to see the more familiar and easily usable TDC controls in TWoS.

Problem is it takes me a long time to sort myself out and input everything manually. In SH2 I used to simply target a ship, the TDC would sort itself, and I could just fiddle with the settings a little depending on where I wanted to hit. Started using the Auto Target ID mod that comes with TWoS and found that unless I made some major adjustments to target speed and bearing then the torpedo would miss all the time. Not by much... often setting the torp for magnetic detonation would at least do some damage, but there was never direct contact between torp and target.

I'm unfamiliar with exactly how training crew works (haven't read that far into the documentation yet.... there's a lot of reading there), so my question is: am I going to have to manually adjust for every single target or will my officer get to the point where I can basically select the target and expect at least a 50/50 chance of a hit?
