Can anyone explain to me how the patrol grids are assigned in flotilla.cfg?
I searched the forum and found a reference where Jscones explained them to WB in an email, but searching the mods forum under flotilla and Patrol +Grid gives me a whole lot of nothing. |

First listed is the Flotilla, in numeric form (it has a number rather than a name). I don't remember how to find the name for each Flotilla, but I'll try to look it up.
Below the Flotilla info is the listing by month, with five different Grid Numbers assigned for each month. It starts in January 1939, and all the listings read '0' until August, which is when the campaign starts. The game selects one of those five choices from the starting month of the patrol and assigns it as your grid. SH3 Commander, among its many other functions, allows you to select your own grid to patrol. I'm not sure if that's clear enough. If not, I'll try to explain further.

Steve is completely correct...as usual...and I would take his comment on SH3 CDR as the best advice on how to deal with it.
The game offers only five choices for any given month, a 20% probability for each of those choices, but still limited to only the five programmed for that month/year. With SH3 CDR you can expand the choices offered and you are also free to select any other grid square you wish. I "consult" with the historical record at uboat.net to assign my initial patrol areas.
