Silent Hunter

![]() ![]() ![]() HMS Terror, as you may know, was the second of the Franklin Expedition ships, lost while seeking out the Northwest Passage. She's said to be in "pristine" condition. https://www.rt.com/viral/359113-fran...ms-ship-found/ HMS Warrior was sunk at Jutland in 1916, after suffering serious damage during the engagement from German battleships. Unlike two other ships in her squadron ("Black Prince" and "Defence"), some of her crew survived. She's intact and upside down, with propellers visible.. http://thepipeline.info/blog/2016/09...lenge-for-mod/ |

Just heard about this on the BBC radio news. Always so exciting when they find something like this.

The big mystery with Terror is, what was her status when she sank? It's possible that Crozier, or whoever was left after Franklin died, ordered a few sailors to turn back and stick on board in case "Terror" was released from the ice, while everyone else walked South to Back's (Fish) River (sadly, no one made it). Or, she may not have been reboarded at all, and could have drifted for miles. In the ice pack, some ships will stay beset for decades before they sink, drifting many miles. Hopefully, some of these mysteries can be solved.
Not much mysterious about Warrior's sinking, because she was clearly described in a sinking condition after her crew was evacuated. I assume she rolled over onto whichever side was facing the German ships (and would have had more flooding from shell holes)... then, she must have completely flipped underwater before hitting the sea floor. Interesting how "Defence", from a very similar class of cruiser, came to rest upright on the seabed, despite massive damage. |

There is a possibility that the ship was remanned and sailed to Terror Bay. We might have to reevaluate the whole Death March scenario. As a follower of this story for many years it's fascinating to see the ships in such condition. Most historians had considered them probably lost forever or else in dreadful condition. The Franklin FB page is humming with activity.
Hopefully the next find will be documentation. The Warrior find is good also. Especially not long after the centenary commemorations.
