Why was it so warm in the diesel engine room ... if they were not using diesel engine because they always were underwater ?

In the hot summer day, park your car, then after few hours go and touch the engine, will be still hot.
Now, if your car is in limited and confined space, this heat will stay there and will be cooled very slowly.

There would also have been auxiliary machinery and/or pumps running, and that would keep things hot in the diesel engine compartment, even with the boat underwater and the main engines off line...

Went aboard the USS Drum recently over the summer, they had the AC vents pumping air all throughout the compartments. Felt quite comfortable actually.

I read that the American fleet boats had AC not just for crew comfort when operating in tropical, shallow water, but also to prevent condensation from fouling all the electronics on board. can't have the TDC shorting out at the critical moment...
