Should I start attacking merchants before the war breaks out?

So since my career starts August 1st, should I be attacking merchants and other commercial vessels or just leave them alone? I am running GWX3Gold w/out S3C.

I've been told to think of the time prior to September 1939 as a shakedown patrol. You can practice on unsuspecting targets and give your crew some experience. However, If you sink any ships before war breaks out, you won't get credit because you have sunk neutrals.

If you'll sink neutral - you'll be penalize, your renown will decrease. I advise you to end the 1st patrol on 3-5 Aug. Then you'll start the next patrol on 23-25 Aug. Just before the biginning of war.

Think about what it would look like from the outside for a moment. You'd be trolling around international waters (flying the flag of Germany -nazi to be sure, but still Germany), and you'd be launching unprovoked attacks against unsuspecting targets. That really would make you a pirate! You'd probably come back to base to find that your U-boat career had come to a halt, permanently.

Assuming, of course, that you survive the war! If your disgraces outweigh your victories then the reich may not work too hard to clean your image, post war or otherwise. Bad captains will disappear, without a trace...
