Hey guys I was hoping someone could answer what is probably a simple question. In silent hunter 4 on the crew management screen sometimes crew members get a yellow arrow pointing up obviously meaning a promotion. my question is do I have to do something or does the game automatically promote them? I been along time player of Silent Hunter Commanders Edition and really enjoy Silent Hunter 4 especially with some of these fantastic Mods you guys have made. Truly Awesome!

I'm not 100% on this, but I think the arrow means they're eligible for promotion. On the left hand side of the screen there's a list of crew members and above this there are three tabs. One is for medals, the other for promotions and I'm totally blanking on what the third is for. After a patrol you click on these and if any medals or promotions are available then they'll be in there. You click on the promotion and it will highlight those crew members eligible for it. Drag and drop to award it - same as for medals.
I think that's it anyway....

The yellow arrow means that your crew member has received a promotion. I think this is true in the first couple of ranks, but after that you can only promote them when your sub is in your home port, the one with the tilted anchor on the navigation map. You can give your guy a higher rank if you haven't exceeded the total number for enlisted and officers. Hope this answers you question.

Something I've noticed as well, crew will be auto promoted based on God knows what. It appears to be longevity and cruise completions and only happens within the segments of non-rated, petty officer and CPO. That is non-rated men auto advance from E-1, SR to E-3 SN automatically, but must be selected for promotion in port to petty officer 3/c. Thereafter, advancement to 1/c just seems to happen without in port selection. However advancement from 1/c to CPO must be in port selection but then CPO to SCPO to MCPO also seems to be auto.
At least that's what I'm seeing.

Larry is correct the arrow only indicates a recent promotion.

I realise this is a bit of a thread hijack, but crew management has always mystified me and since it's never seemed to have any noticeable impact on the game I've pretty much ignored it. Can anyone explain to me what the pros and cons are of promoting/replacing crew members? - Or maybe show me a thread where these things are discussed? I've often searched for one, but never found it yet.....

![]() One of our members made a good post about managing the crew. He figured it all out, after he suffered heavy damage/casualties in one patrol. Alas, I can't remember who posted it. |

Yeah - it seems strange to me - I mean some work has gone into giving these boats a crew that you can manage and yet aside from special abilities, what you do with them seems hardly to matter. Thanks for telling me there is a thread out there though. I shall look harder...
