Default Fondling Nodes (help with S3D)

I've just taken a step into the world of .dat files and I could use some pointers. For my current project, I want to move the conning tower back or forward and add a 5" double turret or an 8" triple turret on a Gato. I'm looking at the Iowa .dat and Gato .dat files to get an idea of how the nodes work. So far I've seen how the nodes move when you adjust the X, Y, Z numbers, but adding a node to which I can place a turret and making it functional is just a tiny bit beyond my current understanding.

Wow I've surprised myself... So far, I have actually created a 6" double turret file for the submarine through copying and modifying files. I have 6" double turret .dat .sim and .zon file, as well as I have added it to upgrade packs and I actually have a 6" double turret on my Gato in-game!!! Unfortunately, the deck gun station button is grayed out, and I cannot man it or fire it. Can anyone help with this?

Well your post was informative and helpful, however, it's still not working for me. I added a .cam file too but it just doesn't seem to be working for me. I remapped the files for the 6 inch deck gun that I singled out. The only ground I seemed to gain is that my camo skin now covers the turret.

I've copied Deck_Gun_4_50.cam and renamed it Deck_Gun_14 to match the other files for my gun. One important thing to do to this file after renaming it is to Remap IDs like before, no need to press the Random button, just Remap IDs. Now let's go to our guns dat file. Open up the first node. Right click on the node and select Append New Child Chunk\Nodes\Node. Then select this new node, right click and select Appen New Child Chunk\Label. I'm going to enter Dmy_cam_14 for the name of this label. This is going to our camera view for our gun. At this point you may want to position the node someplace where you can have a good view unobstructded. Here's what our dat file looks like now.

Once you have that positioned we need to link that to our cam file. So copy the ID number for our new node and go over to the cam file. Change the Parent IDs on both of the CamUserData main entries to that of our node from the dat file.
That is what I missed. Thank you very much! I am now punching double 6" holes in stuff from my Gato now.
