Photo Recon of Hostile Port Mission Approach
Good day fellow skippers,
I really need help in approaching a hostile port without getting caught by the DD's guarding it. IT'S SO ANNOYING ![]() I've tried a few hopeless tricks like torpedoing the DD which is stupid in my opinion. I've tried going in fast, submerged, took a picture but before I manage to get out I get depth charged so hard. Tips and tricks are greatly appreciated. ![]() |

I try to stay as close to the shore as possible and approach as slowly as possible. Sometimes the destroyers will detect you and sometimes they won't.

Are you by any chance using TMO?

Well, there's your problem, TMO takes the IJN's level of efficiency and cranks it up to insane.

Usually, sub-chasers don't have sonar, so as long as you keep periscope use to the absolute minimum (and don't run into them) they probably won't detect you.
DD's do have sonar, but they are deaf to anything happening behind them. So observe, plot, and time the DD's patrol pattern so that you can move in when his back is turned. As he's deaf, you can use speed. If you can't get out before he returns, keep as much distance as you can from him, and keep turning your boat so that your bow or stern is pointed directly at him. This will make you much harder to detect. Keep your RPM's below 50 until he goes away. BTW, there is an Easier A.I. mod for TMO that returns the sub-hunters to stock sensitivity.

I always went in during the night at periscope depth at ahead slow. Never have been detected. Took my pictures turned around and surfaced when I was out of range then get out of there.

The easiest way is to go in at night on the surface. Unless their visual and or radar sensors are set to see you at farther ranges like later in the war they certainly will not hear you with sonar.
Getting in close to shore is ok as long as there are no shore batteries. I have slipped past many escorts on the surface but as soon as you submerge they can hear you if they are within their sensor range for sonar. I have ran into convoys at night slipping past escorts and the outer merchants without being seen. I try to hit the tankers first and then flank to exit the convoy on the other side while we reload for a circle round to attack again.

in TOMI haven't had that trouble.....just one escort and that's it.
Using Traveller mod, 2.6, there are always two escorts, one DD and one tugboat. I usually go ahead flank straightforward to his bow, go to periscope depth, fire a 3 torp spread shot (if available, electric torps are the best to this job)...... DD is out, the tugboat can be eliminated with your deck gun. It takes some practice to do it right, but it works for me! Good luck. ![]() |
