Default British girls spiced up their lifes in Hitler's Germany

http://www.spiegel.de/international/...-a-905617.html

How things change. And change. And change again. It's almost forgotten today that once there indeed were so very close and friendly relations between Britain and Germany. I think there still is quite some mutual fascination in both peoples.

The British football national team even has started to wear the German national team's dress.

Don't ask me why the thread is up three times. I hit the button just once, and had no technical problems at all.

So some people swallowed a crap idealism they thought was the cure for the flaws of democracy, they ranted about immigrants and foriegn religions, they dreamed that a powerbase made of the "elite" could make a functioning model if only they could make room for it to live, they believed in global conpiracies, they were sure they had the answer and anyone who didn't accept their vision as the truth was dumb and could quote their favourite philosophies to back up their vision.
What has changed?

Innocent times. A period of time living in another country is always fascinating and character building. And it proved useful to have young British girls with a first hand knowledge of Europe that could be exploited during hostilities.

How were they exploited during hostilities?
Members of the Right Club, Nordic League, BUF, Anglo-German fellowship and Imperial Fascist League were simply thrown in prison under 18B once uncle adolf went walkabout.

While British girls were attracted by Germany, British boys (from the "gentry") were attracted by another country and another crap idealism.

They were named Kim Philby, Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt, John Cairncross ...

They give not only first hand knowledges of Europe that could be exploited during hostilities, but also a lot of military and secret informations.

But they by weren't thrown in prison ...

Cheers.

Their knowledge of German language and locations in Germany would have proved useful to support the war effort, and exploited for example as translators or intelligence work. I would expect that overall numbers who were actual fascists was low, and that the majority were loyal to Britain and would not have been interned.

There was no real shortage of people who knew germany and its language, can you provide any examples of these particular women doing what you say?

If they helped the war effort(of the UK) in any way the article would have mentioned it because that would have been the interesting aspect. The article does not which implies that they did not or if they did they held a regular job.

@dgn you mention the Cambridge Five who where double agents for the Soviets.I assume you mention this because you suspect that the women that went to Nazi finishing schools would have been likely to be spies if possible for the Germans if so I agree with your opinion they would have been barred from British Intelligence so being a double agent would not have been possible of a double agent is but one type of spy.The Cambridge Five did not wind up in prison only because they escaped to the Soviet Union.
