Default 15 attempts to sink a HC

I was patroling 25 nm away from short island on the 12 of november 1942 and all of a sudden a task force came right to me. It was Yamatos 2 kongo battleships that he diverted from truk to bombard Henderson field and support the reinforcementes to Guadalcanal on the last attempt to retake the airfield by the japanesse in what became to know as the battle of Guadalcanal, the last of several major naval engagements around the land battles of the campaign.

I found myself perfectly position on the flank of the TF consisting of 2 bttleships 2 heavy cruisers and 12 destroyers, with a gap just were i was, 45 degerees ahead to their starport. Daytime, clear skies, save the game, take a breath and ready to give it a go.

Now, i target the first battleship on the line, TDC measures with picks on the periscopes, four fish in the water, not even close. Reload the game, and 5 more attempts to the dammed battleship, not even close....dammmed. Ok lets target one of the cruisers on the outside line, 10 more attempts, of which 3 hit but dud torpedos.

Well, here is the point, it took me 15 apempts on a perfect position the finally get a strike on a heavy cruiser, then heavily deph charged and barely survived. Am I that bad or is this nearly impossible to hit a big warship? What you guys think. Now i have the doubt if continuing the cmpaign with the HC sunk or just accept the reality that i am not going to ever sink a big ship.

Are you running any mods? Are you using auto-target or manual target?

I'm pretty sure stock SH4 has a major problem with the field of view and the tick marks on the periscope which will actually give you some really wild readings for distance to target. This might be what's happening.

Stock is iffy. I usually just eyeballed it in the TDC. Checking out some mods might be your best bet.

Task forces can be tricky, if you want a easy way to get speed find a way to send a contact report, then look at the message you sent. Itll give you the speed, and thats the most important part of the targetting.

Not sure you're complete targeting method, but sounds like some errors are being made somewhere. Give it time, you'll learn how to deal with any situation and sink big ships.

Running RFB+RSRD campaign and some other minor mods. Manual targeting, otherwise i am not playing sh4. It was a difficult task but i end up playing a major role in the Guadalcanal battle. Sank another light cruiser on the 14 november 42, and all the screen destroyers, 6 drew out of formation to sink. Hell they did, but this left the big guns unscreen when facing the 2 north carolina battleships and 4 dd detach from the enterprise task forcie to protect Guadalcanal. So now i am in the history books, though i was awarded why on eternal patrol.

Try the Mk 10's instead of the 14's. They seem to be more reliable for most of the war until mid 1943, despite their speed.

November is a good month for Guadal with RSRD.
