Default SH5 Realism Video Tutorial

No more avi downloads, see the youtube video. For those that really want the avi versions pm me and I will give the link to download.

For future video I plan on showing a convoy attack using the same methods.

For convenience and on-line viewing here is the youtube video links (obviously quality is better with download):

part 1: (480p)
part 2: (480p)

In this two part 16 minute video I show how to manually chart the targets course, speed, range and angle on the bow, all without using map contacts or the auto TDC.

I start at a distance 6500 meters from the intended target and make real time adjustments to the TDC and show how to chart speed and course based on visual readings.

I whipped this up rather quick and may have left some points out, if your not clear on anything please let me know.

For visual purposes I am playing with the external cam on.

223 mb, 2 AVI files packed in RAR format.

I am using Advanced Shift Keys 1.6 in this tutorial but any Command Key mod should work.

This is not intended to be taken as the only way to play, calculate solutions etc... I only wish to show how I play and if someone learns from my style of play than I have accomplished my goal with this video.

Enjoy and Happy Hunting!

EDIT: Never try and control a type 7C under the influence of German liqueur. Course was actually 275 degrees. Read further down for the adjusted math.

Nice video. Pretty epic AOB calculations.

You could have used the 3 min 15 second rule though. Mark points from 0 time to 3 min 15 seconds. Measure the distance in meters and divide by 100 to get speed in knots.

So instead of 850 / 180 = 4.7 * 2 = 9ish you could just do 900m / 100 = 9 kts.

One thing I'd like to see is a bad weather or night manual targeting video. Every tutorial is always in perfect weather where you can see things for nautical miles, but every attack I make is in crap weather and I can never see anything!

Indeed, Calculator is just fun to use and for some reason knowing the conversion from meters per second to knots is just too much fun to pass up ;]

Calm weather bad weather, the math is the same and attack methods don't change.

Next video I do, I will show single boat convoy attack in bad weather, same methods. More detailed too, with less alcohol in the gutt.

Thanks - Nice vid and funny too

Can you explain a bit more about the "Target Course +Rel Bearing - 180 = AOB" Rule? Where does the 180 come from? I have been working out true bearing (Rel Bearing - Sub Course) then using an AOB Banjo but this method seems far faster.

Oh and shouldnt the plots be based on true bearing rather than relative.

Sorry for the noob questions.

LOL the target was not doing 95 degrees.

95 degrees is easterly... not westerly.

Also, if you are pretty much perpindicular and looking "right", you can just do 90 - current bearing to get his AOB.

LOL Gutted, any small little mistakes I can chalk up too 8 shots of Jager

Course was indeed 275

Math should have been TC (275) + TTB (25) -180 = 120

Keep in mind tho that it was backwards math but adjusting the AOB to the right side of view compensated for that mistake.

I dont understand the AOB calculation? Is this correct?

Target Course (Which I believe was actually 275 and not 95?) + Relative bearing to your sub (25) - 180degrees? = AOB?

Can someone explain this to me as it seems a far easier way to calulate AOB than what I am currently doing.

From your post elsewhere:
Quote:
So its Target True Bearing + (plus) Ships Course - (minus) 180 = AOB Which in our case is:

50 + 270 - 180 = 140 AOB

Now adjust the range and confirm the speed.
Is the Target bearing (heading) relative to sub or to True North? Is there another step if your sub is not a 0degrees or is your sub heading irrelavent?

Quote:
Now if your True Target Bearing is 350°, you would simply minus 10 from the formula as so:

10 - 270 - 180 = 80 AOB
? Is this the only time the formula would change?

Sorry for all the dumb questions, I just havent seen this method before.

Relative Target Bearing or True Target Bearing (TTB) is relative to true North.

So if your Targets bearing via your scope is 45 degrees and your course is 350 degrees his TTB is 35 degrees. In this case lets say his course is 225 degrees

When you see him on the left side of your scope at 350 degrees you do the math like this:

225 - 35 - 180 = 10 degrees AOB

If his TTB is 15 degrees and his course is 300 then like this:

300 + 15 - 180 = 135 degrees

You either add or subtract depending on which side of your boat he is on.

Good luck doing this with Sonar only Hopefull after Patch 1.2 we'll have a similar system to SH4 on the Sonar Station, that worked really well.

By the way, mine's a Crown Royal
