Default XO problems ?

I have locked-on to four different ships and got a lock and asked to follow the target. However I got the following message from my XO:
"Following you target ,Sir!
Target is an unknown ship- shoot on my bearing."
This happened the entire time a had a lock finally the ships were out of sight and I lost the lock, is this normal?

all four of my locks had the same results.

I have the default Recognition manual plus a smaller manual that displays the above message. In the tutorials that I have viewed the smaller manual has been replaced by a photo of the XO with all the necessary objectives heading, range speed etc. Is this a special mod?
I can identify the target in the default manuals but I can`t get my XO to copy that!
I know this is difficult to follow but I`m sure someone else has had this same problem. Any ideas?
thanks.

1024 X 768 is good to start with. You can make adjustments to later pictures when you see how it looks after you submit it. You can also "preview" the picture before you submit the post.
