Default Repetitive

Yup, that's it. SH4, even modded up, is starting to get a bit too repetitive.

Other than the fail-safe mods like TMO and such, I could not find releif from this repetitiveness with, say, FOTRS or other radical game-changers. So what I probably should be looking for is another approach - such as droping campaing mode and concentrating on playing varied single patros or something like that.

What do you old timers do when you feel you had enough of the game, but could be exploring it further in some other angle?

Load up my Convoy from Hell, Slightly Subnuclear Deck Gun, Slightly Subnuclear Mark 14 and Cutie and Neon Deon's Pimp My Boat 2. It's time for some ridiculously non-authentic carnage!

Now even with the super boat you can't just wade in there among all those armed merchants. But you sure can pop 'em from afar and watch the panic.

Then you can do the sheepdog thing and isolate twos and threes. My record with this is over 10,000 tons sunk in 10 minutes 10 seconds.

It is a total blast and not like a campaign at all........

It happens, I often try changing things up to my own taste. They're several ships or ship packs you can add, but if you use mods like RSRD you have to add them in the traffic layers. I've added about 12 ships not in RSRD, edited escorts to vet and elite status and added more groups.

Several have made some great single missions, always fun.

It probably get repetitive for the RL skippers too. That's probably why they started engaging in activities like planting demo charges under railroad bridges, launching rockets on shore targets, and watching horse races through their periscopes.

Load up SHIII and play it until a corrupted game-save ends my career.

Play something else for a while. I haven't touched SH4 in a while for the exact same reason, but I've been having fun with other games.

After a few months, I'll go back to it again.

Default On a less frivolous note than my previous post...

CapnScurvy's OTC mod has breathed new life into this game for me.

It calibrates the historic U.S.N. periscope to the players screen resolution, allowing you to accurately determine range and A.O.B. from persicope observations alone. You can launch an attack using only what you can measure from the periscope or TDC.

It's fun because your solution becomes more accurate as the range decreases, just as your chance of being detected increases. You have to decide where you draw the line. I also find that I am never sure of a hit with this technique - that puts some drama back into the game

The mod provides a in-game slide-rule to calculate range and A.O.B. but I think you'll find that you get better at estimating these with experience.

With enough repetition, I'm hoping that I'll be able to have a good chance of hitting a target based on one periscope observation alone - a "snap shot". So repetition may actually be rewarded with this mod.

I find that downing 12 pints of lager beforehand considerably increases the challenge.

Or if it really is getting repetitive I will often turn my monitor upside down or sometimes change into my wife's clothes to shake things up a bit.

A dangerous mixture.

I think that most video games get repetitive if you keep playing them over and over.

When I get bored with SH4 (and to be honest it is not the most exciting video game out there) I, like the others, take a break and play something else.

Does that make SH4 a badly designed game? Not at all. The nature of the game is that there are long periods of doing nothing (even with TC) followed by shorter periods of implementing one of a handful of procedures. That's pretty much it. And if you have a patrol where you never see any ships you don't even get the chance to run your procedures.

About every 5th mission something sporty will happen that makes it all worth while. In this case, SH4 is a great WWII submarine simulator - one is either bored to death or scared to death.

So when (not if) SH4 becomes boring to you, just take a break and load up some other game. The nice thing about WWII is that it will always be ready to start up when you reload SH4.

Funny how every time I get the yen to play SH4, the Japanese seem to bomb Pearl Harbour. Weird.
