build a model.....I started a 1969 Dodge L700 cab over with flatbed. The smell of plastic parts and glue brought back many memories of my youth building models. Models have not changed much but materials to build them sure have. This was last nights work. Today I will clean up the mold marks and blend plastic were needed. This frame will be painted flat black. Note the 5th wheel for the trailer. This model also has a 1940 Ford coupe that can be placed on the flat bed. I plan on making the Ford a wrecked car. Similar to what is shown on the box the model is packaged in.

When/if I ever graduate, I would like to get in to modeling. I think that is a great hobby and now that I am older, I think I have the patience for it... as for skill? Well I guess I can learn.

Subframe together and sprayed with flat. This will eventually be sprayed red. Cab will be white.

Testing cab fit. Need some touch up. The hard part is making the model all spit shine and brand new looking then weathering all your work for some realism. I hope to have the cab finished by the weekend. Then I start on the flatbed. The 1940 Ford Coupe will be a wrecker on my flat bed.

It has been a long time for me in making a model. The smell of paint and glue bring back fond memories of making models. It also brought back memories of the store calling my house to let my parents know I was buying model glue. Back in the day it was top choice for the glue sniffers. Once the store owner got the ok from my pop I could get the glue.

Oh man, you know it's been over twenty years since I opened the box? The last model I built was a 1/48 Apache Longbow, and never got around to painting it.

Great job on the truck! I love building models. My favorite types to build have always been ships. I threw most of the ones out that I did as a kid. I did a 1965 Dodge Coronet 500 last year as well as the USS Constitution. I also fixed up an old tugboat my grandfather had given me many years ago. I'd love to build another model, but I can't justify the cost anymore. When you get everything you need plus the model it gets pretty expensive.

It is expensive. The initial cost of paints sucks but there is enough to do several models. This spreads the cost out for materials and makes it much easier to accept the entire cost. I probably spent $30.00 in materials. I can get two or three other models out of what have. In fact, I purchased a 1:25 scale Buick Wildcat to build. All I need is the paint for the body of the car. I have everything else.

A good place to get some car paint might actually be AutoZone or Advance Auto. Duplicolor lacquers give really good results. Might I also suggest a really cool forum for car models? Some of the work there is truly amazing.

Wow! Some of those guys at that forum are above what I can do. I wish I know how to airbrush. Watching some of these guys who airbrush freehand is simply amazing to me.

Thanks for that link. I found some great ideas on weathering/rust look for my 40 Ford coupe that will go on the flat bed trailer for this tractor trailer. The kit is a tractor/trailer with 40 Ford coupe. What is nice about the kit is I can make the 40 Ford a custom rod or a junker. The kit gives you the pieces to make what you like. I'm going with the rusty junker on it's way to the restoration shop. It is hard to read but the sticker on tractor reads, "Melillo's Auto Restoration." So it makes sense to have a rusty Ford on the flat bed.

Ok, started work on my 40 Ford that will be modeled as if just fresh pulled from the field and going to the shop for a restoration.

I got this idea and proceedure from the link Syxx Killer provided. First I distressed the plastic body with a dremel tool. I created rust holes were needed.







next I painted one light coat of flat black and added salt on top. I then sprayed a coat of brown primer with will serve as some rust color but not all. I added another bit of salt to the paint.







Once this dries I'll apply a product that creates actual rust. I will also apply my final color which is blue. There will be an application of rubber cement over the rusting material. You will understand why later on. I will post up pictures when I do this. After the last coat and the rusting product I need to allow dry for the night.
