Although it can certainly be difficult to find common mental language with them... Not impossible though, my brother's on the verge of marrying a Japanese gal for one.

Once you get to know them well enough (we lived there three years, which is kinda short I guess) some of that weirdness kind of goes away. Or maybe you just get used to it

I think the Japanese have similarities to the west in many situations, more than many give them credit for, certainly there's enough to make the government and the elderly disapprove.
