Motor Tanker RFA Sveve, a Swedish Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel, was hit by one torpedo from U-96 (Hans-Jürgen Hellriegel), on September 10, 1942. The hit was in a main storage tank, and caused a tremendous explosion.
Apparently thinking the ship had sunk, U-96 departed the scene. Sveve's crew abandoned ship and were picked up shortly thereafter by the corvette HMCS Sherbrooke. The tanker was not sinking, so Sherbrooke put 15 4" rounds into her. When that didn't work four of Sveve's crew and four of Sherbrooke's crew boarded the striken tanker and opened the seacocks, which finally mader her sink. So, who gets the credit for sinking Sveve? http://uboat.net/allies/merchants/ships/2138.html
