Default Mine detection.

I`m having a difficult time getting past Gibraltar dues to mines.
Is there anyway to detect them or how to avoid them? Is it better to
cruse down the middle of the strait or closer to shore with enough depth to dive if necessary.

I don't know if it's possible or not but lower one of your scopes and look for mines that way.

It's a cheat but you could use the external camera and scout ahead of your sub.

There is an addon mod within OHII that will show them on hydro

Its quite a thrill actually to lift your scope and suddenly theirs a mine right next to your sub.

Actually this is a good thing to bring up and I'm a bit surprised not to see more discussion about this subject in this and the other SH3 and 4 forums as well.
Just how did the U-boats and Fleet boats and the subs of Briton and all avoid mines when they had a good idea that they would have to get through a field of them, Gibraltar being a great spring board example.
There were hundreds of known minefields that the subs would have to get through to get to a intended target or mission destination.
The U-Boats seemed to have a few designs to ward off getting entangled in anchor cables attached to mines.
If a U-boat or Sub was ordered to an area that they would likely have to pass through a field, how would they prepare for this and what precautions could be taken to reduce the chances of striking one.
I have to keep remembering that, in real life, they only had one chance.

If you take the commanding officer, that guy with one eye, he is stiff as a torpedo, put him on front of the sub, he can act like a mine sweeper. I bet he will complain afterwards, he is so angry all the time.

How deep do the mines go exactly?

World War 2 submarines had no way of detecting mines. Even the much-loved game trick of using the periscope wasn't a viable tactic. WW2 periscopes had very poor vision, especially underwater. If a minefield was known to be in a certain area, you avoided that area.

With the exception of the anti-submarine fields of submerged mines around the British coast minfields were confined to the areas near major seaports and naval bases. This is part of the reason that raids on naval bases were few and far between. It was just too dangerous.

As for the Strait of Gibraltar, apparently there weren't any minefields there.

If there were anti-submarine mines in the area, they may be partly responsible for the fact that that very few u-boats made it into the Mediterranean and none at all made it back out.

Today's periscope optics costs up to half a billion dollar or less only for the optics. It has incredible sight, crispy and clear. What you see on a picture is not anything like the real thing and the real experience.

Anyways, I would never want to play a game with modern submarines. I'd stay with ww2 type games.
