I've been playing SH3 for only a few weeks now so these questions might be on the beginner's side
![]() 1. What determines which grid you'll be assigned to patrol? Is it random or is it based on which year/month of the war you're in? I'm wondering if there's any historical accuracy in the relationship between war date and patrol area assignments. 2. On my first patrol I ran across HMS Rodney in a convoy, so I tried to sink her, fired a salvo of three torpedoes, two of them had premature detonation but the last one hit and five seconds after impact the "she's going down" message showed up. I'm not sure if that's realistic, maybe a bug or some mix up with my mods, but I don't think one torpedo could sink a ship that size that fast. 3. I know that when you get a radio contact message(convoys, task forces) it show up on the map, but sometimes when I'm on patrol with time compression on, single ship contacts that are 100km+ away show up on the map without any radio message or anything. Is that normal? 4. Do premature torpedo detonations alert escorts and ships of your presence? These are the mods I'm using right now: GWX 3.0 GWX 3 - Wilhemshafen - St Naz - Schluese and xtra ships V6 TMT v2 + ThomsensShips V4.2 by h.sie LifeBoats & Debris v4 ACM-GUI Reloaded - h.sie's Edition V1.15 Waterstream+Exhaust Combi V2.3 for GWX3 WB's Fuel Economy Flags_enlighten ACM-GUI - LLRT2+SRM-Combi V4.0 ACM-GUI - DepthCharge-Shake V1.8 |

Hi
1 - Grids are assigned by month and year Jaesen ( SH3commander author ) took great pains in researching those grids along with others so yes they are pretty historical 2 - No possibly you shouldnt have sunk the Rodney with one torp though you may have had a lucky shot Probably couldnt recreate it if you tried 3 - yes its normal to get those 4 - Not sure about that one - Have had prem dets and they have ignored them but other times have seemed to " wake up " May just have been a co incidence though |

Wooly is far more credible than I, but I can help here a bit!
1. Grids are indeed based on flotilla operating areas and very historical. 2. Like Wooly said, that shot was probably a once in a career stroke of luck. There is always a chance of critical damage (game engine-wise); as I understand it it is location specific using manual targeting and random using the weapons officer. Did you see the hit/ result? Did it blow up big like a magazine was hit maybe? 3. These contacts often come with a radio message, but other times they are contacts probably reported by aircraft, other subs, etc. 4. My experience here is the same as Woolys; Sometimes it gets spotted and sometimes it doesn't. |

Thanks for the answers guys! Yeah it was probably a lucky shot, it didn't blow up or anything, there were only a few fire spots on the deck. I just found it weird to get the going down message so soon.
