Why in GWX do 20mms only have AP ammo?

The only 20mm I knew of in WW2 to carry AP was the Panzer II tank, and for understandable reasons. Aircraft are no where near armored enough to call for AP ammo.

Well first, AP rounds for the 20mm flaks are the Silent Hunter III default. GWX does not change the default 20mm round type.

Secondly, the other three types of 20mm rounds were not as appropriate as the AP round. (The other types were SS, HE, and AA... noting that the AA shell type explodes and is more appropriate for heavier guns in the game... not the 20mm.)

Thirdly, the aircraft damage models and weapon damage values in GWX were modified and extensively tested in relation to each other to acheive historically plausible results.

HE was the standard 20mm for AA duty in WW2, since you wanted them to explode on contact and do max damage.

On Wiki, and granted it was WIKI, they didn't list any AP ammo that was made for the Flak 30 or C/30.

kreger11b, the elements I refer to relate to limitations of the game itself. You are welcome to modify your copy of GWX to suit your taste, but be aware that virtually everything in SH3 and/or GWX serves multiple functions, and changing values etc can result in other elements exhibiting unusual behavior.

There are plenty of interrogation reports at Uboatarchive.net that state that AP rounds were part of the 20mm ammo loadout. Typically, a mixed loadout of 20mm AP and HE would have 1/3 AP rounds and 2/3 HE rounds.

actually, i think the sdkfz 232 also carried AP, to fight other armoured cars. maybe they should have included standard ammo, to use on aircraft. im not really sure though, maybe if someone where to go back in time to see u-boats, we would have a clearer picture.

The older BF-109s (Early war models) armed with the MG/FF 20mm Cannon had a belting (I believe) of HE(Incendiary), mine, HE(I), mine, AP. The mine rounds were a round with as large a charge for explosives that could be fit into a 20mm cartridge. It was done by making the round's walls as small as possible.

But, even then, there was 1 AP round in a five round belting. I think that the belting was similar for later models too, even those with the far superior MG151 (Much higher velocity 20mm)

EDIT: ALl that info was pretty irrelevant. You're right, for a flak gun the 20mm should be outfitted with HE almost exclusively. That was for sure the most effective weapon against aerial targets. AP just makes neat little holes, having nothing solid to really go through.
