SH3 is infamous for corrupt saves. Keep backing up to previous saves until one works. Save early and save often.

You know,in 5 years of playing I have never experienced corrupt saves, except one time I saved while submerged and the game crashed to desktop upon reloading.I had to start the patrol again (I guess this is a corrupt save then hehe)
I suspected having anisotropic filtering enabled caused problems, upon disabling it my game has been rock solid since

Do you use Catalyst? You mean you set it to Application Controlled?

I use Catalyst drivers yes,and used to have AF enabled in SH3,but now I have it set to application controlled. Some games can have problems if you force certain effects and they arent properly supported, and Sh3 is possibly such a game.I also enable Catalyst A.I and set it to standard, this optimizes graphics for you without any noticable loss to quality or performance.Another option I enable is one called 'geometry instancing' ,this allows the video card buffers to render repetitive objects such as trees or grass for example a lot quicker by using a default model and replicating it where needed instead of rendering 100s of different trees or grasses causing a huge strain on available video memory.Would you really notice the difference?on a tree or patch of grass I mean.
NOTE - my video card is an ageing ATI X800 Pro 256MB
4 GB system RAM

Where is that option "geometry instancing"? Also what are your settings for AA and AAA? I am asking because I have some Black Screens of Death and I have to reboot. I have checked EVERYTHING about software/hardware that you can imagine and now I am searching for the settings. I have SAPPHIRE HD4850-512, on a PCIe 1.0x16 motherboard.

Do you not know how to open the catalyst control centre you mean?
Well if thats the case, first you want to right click anyhwere on your desktop and at the top of the menu there will be Catalyst control centre at the top, highlighted with a red ATI symbol,if its not there look in your 'start' menu,it should be in there under /Programs/ATI/Catalyst,simply click on it to open it.
Once in there there will be 2 viewing modes, basic and advanced, you want to pick advanced, this will give you more options to choose from.
Now all you need to do is go through each section and set them to your preference, usually found in the '3d' section of the listing.Dont worry too much about monitor or gamma settings,we can go through that later if you need to.
My settings for AF and AA are set to application preference, but I sometimes enable AF in games like Oblivion where the demands are not as high and you can usually get away with it.
Also,if you are having fps issues make sure you disable 'vertical sync' this allows your game to play independantly of your monitor's refresh rate at the expense of a little 'tearing' at times, which is hardly noticeable.
I shouldnt worry too much about those advanced options anyway, usually setting texture quality to 'high' and playing with a decent resolution is all you need, the game still looks great! All AA does is smooth the edges of certain objects making them look less jagged but is a real fps killer!,but as I said playing at say 1600x900 (with the res fix mod) eliminates the need for AA as the game looks much smoother with the higher res.

Feel free to ask for help if you still need it.

Sorry,I didnt mean to come off as being sarcastic
Ok,to find geometry instancing -
- open up CCC
- highlight the 3d section
- scroll right down to the bottom where 'enable AA' is found and below that should be 'geometry instancing' ,and below that is 'triple buffering' which you should also enable for extra performance. This allows 3 buffers to store texture data instead of just 2.

If you CANT find G.I. then you may have a really old version of CCC and as far as I know the really old versions didnt come with support for G.I.
It will be important to find out which version of CCC you have.
My current version is 10.2 ,which is about 1 month old I think.
Below is the link to the ATI driver database, just select your card and operating system to find the latest driver for you.

Let me know how you go.
