Default Y4L's Log Of Poorly Planned Patrols

Well, I thought I'd share with everyone here my somewhat poorly thought out submarine happenings.

I'm sure you'll find a little bit of enjoyment in laughing in delight after torpedo after torpedo just misses that bloody ship (You know the feeling...)

I'd call myself a veteran of SH3, but that's not truly correct, just because I've played a lot doesn't mean I'm any good at it!

So without any further ranting, I present my first entry into this log:
I left my base with high hopes and low expectations, loaded with torpedo's and my all important deck gun shells, heading for Britain's eastern coast, to raid some shipping.

This was the result of my first attack, one missed torp, and another creating a huge hole in the side, amazingly, this merchant ship refused to sink!

I decided to utilise a weapon that never fails to disappoint, the deck gun. I surfaced and began firing, but it took more than it's fair share of rounds to sink!

I quickly fled the scene, taking a nearby destroyer down to aid my escape (I'm not going to lie, the shot was a fluke), and I quickly realised I was being pursued by another, I fired a rear tube, a shot I was pretty proud of, hitting the destroyer, crippling it, allowing me to escape whilst it's engines quickly died out.

I was pleased to see the destroyer take a rapid nose dive, it's front half sinking in under five seconds! My day just kept getting better!

I returned to base to rearm myself, a decision that proved useful, well, it would've been if I actually hit anything with those torps I rearmed myself with.

I stumbled across a huge convoy of merchants/transports numbering about 16 ships, with no escorts! The only defences they had were a few AA guns which were strapped to their 4 largest ships (To their credit, they did damage my periscope temporarily with it), I hit one of the 4 largest with two torpedo's, the rest either hit a few of the smaller ships or missed.

I moved in and finished it off with the deck gun:

I continued to assess situation:

I turned around and let off my last torpedo at one of the larger ships via the rear tube, then continued to harass one of the smaller ships.

Do you see it? Because I nearly missed it!! Look to the left, one of the larger ships is 3/4 underwater! That was one good shot!!
I finished off the small merchant and moved on.

I sunk one of the larger tanker looking ships and moved on to finish off a smaller merchant that one of my first torpedo's had hit, before running completely out off both types of shells.

So I sailed off into the night, happy with sinking two massive ships that I assumed to be troop carriers, two smaller merchants and a tanker.

My most successful SH5 patrol, and my 5th most successful to date!

Nice read! But if that is 'poorly planned'... what well planned would look like?

That's a haul any U-Boat Ace of the period would have been jumping for joy over.

It's certainly more tonnage than I've sunk in my campaign so far - although I also have 9 destroyers to my credit

Agreed. U-boat ace doing this kind of warpatrols would quite fast earn Knight's Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds (atleast if I had been Führer).

I say poorly planned because I fired a salvo, 3 out of the four of which missed, then I steamed headlong in and started firing with the deck gun.

But oh well, if it works!

If it makes you feel any better I ran into a 7 ship convoy fired off about 9 torpedoes all of which struck then I had to surface to finish off 2 ships that refused to sink and I managed 4 ships.

I had to bail out of there cause the escorts finally took notice and were steaming within range of their guns. Fortunatly it was deep and I dropped to about 60 meters and the escorts were clueless as I sailed away quite satisfied.

Never would have got away with that in previous versions but it is what it is.

I've been hunting around for that British Carrier just at the mouth of the British Channel, but I've had no luck finding it, anybody know a specific patrol pattern it has?

I could search for it some more, but I keep getting pretty distracted by those tasty destroyer patrols...
Oh, and by distracted I mean sunk whilst taking them on with my deck gun (Though I did manage it once!)
