Default Just a thought - The SH5 GUI

Just a quick thought with regards to the SH5 GUI.

After a couple of days play and some tinkering I actually resisted the temptation to mod the GUI and its now paying off.

In short rather than a none atmopsepheric GUI (SH3/SH4), I use the actual Control room Depth Gauges / Compasses, Speed etc. (Pity the Navigation Clock wasnt working properly but hey). Now I have had to configure the Keys to provide quick shortcuts using a mod but really its not all that bad using the out of box GUI and in actual fact it adds to the drama / atmosphere IMO.

The only other downside is entering a new bearing quickly (Ie the ability to shout out a new course heading) but this can be worked around with the "Heading to View" key.

Together with the morale system (now I understand it) and having to run to stations (all adding atmosphere) - SH5 is growing on me.

Just a thought.

I see where your coming from here, all the info is there for us, just not what we are used to as in sh3 and 4.

At least the interior was interactable in SH3. I could flip switches and stuff. Not so much in SH5. Besides, the CAPTAIN didn't go around flipping switches and turning dials, he had a crew for that. Therefore all functional commands should be hotkeys. While it's neat to have the ability to do things manually, I wouldn't want to be required to do so.

Maybe make the dial interactive therefore clicking on a depth gauge takes you to that depth - simulating saying "take us to 100m" etc.

No, it's not, not even close in fact.

What about asking for the depth under the keel, or setting deck guns to fire at the waterline, or suspending battery recharging, or gettng the boat's range at current speed?

I agree absolutely with the OP's point, and we'll get there one day with mods. But currently the minimalist approach is flawed, because IMO the wrong elements are currently displayed (bright orange"!" marker, TC controls) and missing elements are not (compass). And don't get me started on the iPhone look of the GUI in general.

Plus, as far as I can tell, the depth and helm controls in the control room are still not functional. Or am I missing something?

You can bind any of the above to keys . I actually use a mod for key shortcuts it has a nice F1 display showing where they are etc. It includes all those things:

Church_s SHV 1.01 Keyboard Commands v1.1

there is a lot missing from the GUI

I have a feeling somebody rushed somebody else. (UBI big whigs)

all the features are there...we can copy and paste the new GUI so...remember Sh4 it will get better no worries
