i believe it was tested once or twice, but i dont think it was ever used in a combat condition.

if it was... it was not a very notable device

I wouldn't want that thing hanging from my U-boat, impeding my crash dive time, considering the number of Allied patrol planes out there by mid-1943.

from memory only one sinking was carried out as a result of spotting from the gyro

Yeah. And only deployed operationally from type IX U-boats deployed to the Indian Ocean.

I also remember reading that Doenitz issued an order limiting their use as it caused confusion for the Japanese in the region. Too lazy to look for it now...

fancy thing, this gyro. but they should have invented better active radars...instead of such laborious copter thing. that would have made the trick!
