Can I delete the files in mods folder after installing all mods I need?

I mean the mods folder created by jsgme.
I'm desperate for a little more disk space.

And I have installed all mods I want and don't intend to uninstall any of them in near future, so I guess the contents in mods folder is not necessary, AFAIK they are only used for installation of new mods by jsgme, hence it should be safe to empty it.
I just made a small test, after removing a mod directory from the mods folder, I can still play the game, nothing seems wrong so far. However I still want to be sure.
