I always play Op Monsun with the conning tower completely unstaffed, keeping my sonarmen in the Radio/Listening Room. One of my crewmen just received the "expert sonarman" ability, however the description for that ability says: "Required compartment: Conning Tower." I haven't had trouble detecting ships with the conning tower unstaffed before... should the conning tower be staffed? What's the difference between the conning tower and the radio/listening room?
I'm in a VIIB, if that matters. |

The conning tower is a place to put your watch deck crew while you are submerged and under depth charge attack. IIRC, RFB and OM use a similar damage model where everything outside the sub is much more fragile, but that will also include and crew that is supposed to be on the watch deck.
If you put them in the conning tower, they won't be as prone to dying when you are DC'd.

Just as a personal opinion, I think the CT gets mentioned because the special abilities system in game was made for US boats, where sonarmen indeed were located in the CT. In Uboats, sonarmen are placed in the radio room, but the explanation for each ability does not reflect this change, hence the indication about best performing in the CT. Actually, in the original Uboat expansion, there was no CT compartment, IIRC. |
