Make sure your copy of the game isn't already patched to v1.4.
Look at the lower right corner of the main menu to see what version of the game you have. Later copies of the game are already patched. If you try to patch a patched game, you'll get weird error messages.

Also make sure you have the patch for the right region (US vs. EU/Asia/MiddleEast) and installation type (downloaded vs. DVD game) combination.
