I was on a mission to the Carolina's and after being sunk 4 times, only finding destroyers and fishing boat, I replayed the missin and started in Midway (again). I was assigned a new Balao. Mission departure was out of San Francisco, again to the Carolina's, in a brand spanking new Balao. After passing Pearl I encountered and tracked two tankers and a freighter. After I fired and missed two shots I realized they were flying American flags. That ended the foray. I continued to Pearl and refueld, continued to the patrol area, and spotted an American task force. I headed off in anther direction and located a second, huge task force. I shadowed it for awhile, raced ahead, and lied in wait for it to come within range. I assumed it was Japanese, as I spent close to an hour planning the attack. Lo and behold, it was another American convoy. I decided to toss the game and have some fun. Ten torpedoes and ten hits on two U.S. Saratoga class carriers! (After all, it is just a game.) They were well built as they did not explode after repeated hits, but they did go under. My radioman was beside himself and announced (for real), "After all, sir, whose side are we on?" That sailor has a mouth on him!

When I return to port, what message will I get from command? That I am being court martialed?

Some old killjoy in gold lace is bound to ask "Tell us - do you imagine you're playing some sort of a game?"

But really, before firing your crew would have wrestled you to the deck, confined you humanely and delivered you home where you would have quietly been hushed up.

Oh jeez I've taken this seriously.

What makes you think your crew is going to let you make it back to port alive?

Shame on you.................All that time to sink US ships.

Long ago I was playing with contacts and cams off and just loaded RSRD.

I ID the carriers as Fleet Carriers...Just thought it was some ships RSRD added. Sunk two carriers. I then ID a Cleveland Class and knew I goofed.

I returned to base and was CM"ed and tossed in the brig.

I know you hardcore, realists will appreciate using no cams and will undoubtedly attempt at some point to kill using sonar contacts only.... tell me, is this breaking protocol?

Isn't it mandatory that a skipper attempt to ID the target first? To avoid something like this happening?

I'm curious....did the escorts start pinging for you? I doubt they did because of the way the game is coded, but undergoing a depth charge attack by US destroyers armed with more up to date ASW technology would be the perfect deterrent to that sort of thing.

Default not pinged

my boat was never pinged by a destroyer and it was at close range. Also, radar displayed a red ship outline of the carriers and not a black dot. I am playing FOTRS.

The first Carolina mission is a killer. It is in August of 1942 or thereabouts. Two enemy task forces are anchored near Truk in shallow waters. They are protected by destroyers, patrolling all around them. The open ocean has few ships, primarily destroyers and fishing boats. The are just a couple of moving task forces but they are few and far between, and only one is in the patrol area. Tough mission to excel at. I think I sank on fishing boat and missed 6 shots at a freighter, and even though I locked the target with the Easy Aob mod, it did not respond to repeated range measurements. URGH!
