Switch to your Observation Scope, lock a target in the crosshairs, and click the camera icon at the bottom. Mission accomplished!

Admiral, here are the recon photos of the Nip ships in harbor when we got there. As you can see, they had 1 carrier, 1 cruiser, 4 destroyers and 3 auxiliary ships tied up in the harbor. These photos are useless now, because we sank them all after taking the pictures. Why can't we just shoot first and take pictures of what's left after we run out of torpedoes?

That's pretty funny! Shoot first, take pictures later.

You should probably send out a contact or status report. They'll likely transmit you a new mission.

Got the photos?

OK, now follow Jonny Rico's advice in "Starship Troopers"

KILL 'EM! KILL 'EM ALL!!

(um, the deck gun in Tokyo Bay is probably not such a good idea, then run away quickly! Hang out off Tateyama in some deep water, reload and wait for a cruise ship or two.)

You'll enjoy the "rescue the pilots mission" too. Not easy to work that one out either.

Take note, take those pictures before you blow them up. Otherwise you will not be able to complete your mission !

Take it that the pictures are in case you miss and may reveal more than just the ships in the pictures.

I used to hate those recon mission. But they can be fun too. usually a destroyer or two will be lurking near by. Rather than sneaking by them I will take em out. I will get close to them with 2K yards and raise the scope, they usually detect me. It seem generally scripted that one makes a run at you. They come straight on with no zig zagging, so a down the throat shot usually does them in. Then go take pics and sink whatever is there. Just be wary of land based armament. So, you get to bag a couple of DD's, complete your objective and sink sitting ducks after that. Nice....

Heh, taking out ships in the harbor after taking your pictures can be fun. I had to sneak into Tokyo once, got in and took my pictures. Then on my way out I spotted a Hiryu at anchor, and decided that it was too good of a target to pass up. Got broadside, and dropped a salvo of ten into it, down it goes to settle on the bottom.

Funniest thing about that was, as I exfiltrated, the destroyers guarding the passage weren't acting any differently, and I managed to get a merchie on my way out too. Not sure if any mods out there account for the AI behavior in this case, but I'd have thought that Ubi would at least make them put up some submarine nets or something if one of their fleet carriers get sunk at anchor...

This is one of the major oversights of the sim and there still is no mod for it. You can basically sink most of the IJN at anchor with impunity even in major Japanese ports like Tokyo or Osaka as RL features like anti-sub nets, minefields, anti-torpedo barriers, small patrol craft, coast watchers, uncharted obstacles and currents aren't there as they should be.

A lot of players just go with a self-imposed house rule on this one or you get some real unrealistic tonnage numbers.
